Just getting into this cranking thing. Had some folks mention I might experience some problems with my 2 stroke motor. It is a Yamaha 40 hp on a 1654 F&F. So far it has worked best dropping my trolling motor and running my outboard at just idle speed. GPS puts me at bout 1.7mph. Doing this seems pretty easy as I fish by myself some. What say y'all gurus??
Won't hurt it. Only suggestion is air it out good on the way to the ramp. They don't load up as much today with the modern oils and oil injection.

Think that's what done happened to mine!!!! :yikes I had to idle back against the wind a good bit and the last run back up wind we just reeled up and was gonna head in and bam got bout 2 miles and sluggish wont get over 2300 rpms and if throttle is advanced it jumps and stuff
I use my 25 etec it's made for trolling. It has a up and down rpm control. Put it in gear and 3 bumps up Iam trolling.
Don't over-oil if you're premix, change the plugs more frequently, run hard on the way back to the ramp. You'll be fine.
I use my 75hp. I tilt it all the way up just so it pees to slow it down. Run hard on way in to clear out,so far so good.
Ran a 40 2-stroke for several years trolling. On calm days I would drop an anchor on 10 ft of rope off the bow cleat (similar drag as the trolling motor but my trolling motor mount wasn't strong enough for me). I would occasionally shift to neutral and give it a rev it up a tad through out the day. Also ran it at the end of the day and check plugs more often.
Have a johnson 40....been trolling cranks for years with no problems.
I can put mine in gear at idle and do 5 mph:biggrin
Then run it out at 5600 RPM, then change the plugs every other trip
i took the auto oil off--didn't trust it
I have a 115hp four stroke. I think I will pass on trolling with it. LOL:fish
Put a troll plate on it and the four strokes are the best there are for the job.
If you don't want to use a trolling plate, you can hang an 18" drift sock off each side and it will slow ya down to 1.5 or so. You can adjust the throttle from there. I do this when I use my main engine, and have done it with up to the 200 I have now. It works best if you have a No Feed Back helm so the engine can't turn the helm. I use my Terrova to steer the boat.
