Having two new HumminBirds, and being new to them, I can tell you what has helped me is playing with the settings and listening to the advice here. I wasn't too happy at first but I've learned to play with depth, sensitivity, and chart speed have made the biggest differences.
Gonna need a little more info : like what settings you have on, what speed you're moving, and any screenshots or photos of what you're seeing on the screen.
I don't own a Hbird, but my Lowrance Elite 5DSI will not give a good, clear "image" unless I am moving faster than 0.5mph ... and gives a better image as speed increases to the 1-2mph range.

i recently bought a hb 561 di and i have yet to be happy with it. i have found structure but yet to get a clear picture. the pictures i am seeing are just like 2d pictures. can anyone help with this or guide me towards the right settings?
Is the screen background black or white?
Can you post an example?
I have had it on both black and clear. The switch fire is o clear mode chart speed is 5 sensitivity is at 13 my speed is around 1 when I locate structure and then I anchor over it. Sharpness is medium and contrast I think is 10. I have played with it a lot and I figured I would look for help now. You can tell your over Christmas trees because it will look like 2d sonar with 2 humps side by side.
scfisherman here is a link to the side/downimaging where I posted some pics from DI Scroll down til you see my name. These are off a 958, but I think yours should look similar if it is working correctlly. I had a 597 and it performed very similar to the 958 as fas di pic. I hope this helps, if not keep asking, there is a lot of knowledge on this board!

Redge mine are not even close to that. Any suggestions on where to put my settings for a good starting point to adjust from?
Look up Doug Vahrenberg's videos on you tube. Great info on the birds operation and settings. Remember down image uses a thin slice shaped beam as opposed to 2d cone shape. If you are sitting in one spot anchored you just see the same slice over and over. Try moving 2mph or so as suggested and play with settings.
scfisher I have never really had to play with the settings to get a good picture. I do play with them but it has never been to get a good picture, it has been to refine what I see. I am suspecting that you have a problem with transducer/unit? See if you can find someone local, (bet there are plenty of crappie.com people) to try your unit on their boat? Maybe HBGreg will chime in here, he is a wealth of knowledge. Both my 597 and 958 I just installed and they worked right off the bat no messing around or tuning. I wish you were closer we would just go for boat ride this weekend and figure it out. I realize this doesn't help much but it is all I know to offer. you might try posting a screen capture and let us see what you are seeing.
Yea idk. I just put the boat in the shop to get a new tea some put on it but as soon as I get it out ill try posting some pictures. When I fist put it on I wasn't getting anything.
