Major, just turn the stat switch off. It will be fine until you can replace it.
Oops, sorry canebreaker. We musta been typing at the same time.
Hush up joe before I get WB to come smak you around
Turn the breaker off. Pull the stat out of the junction box. It will have two wires connected to it. (If it is a single pole switch). Plus a ground wire (bare copper or green insulation). Disconnect the two wires and cap them with wire nuts and electric tape. Put the switch back in the junction box if you want to. Then turn the breaker back on. It will be fine.
Major make sure the power is off.If you connect the dimmer energized ,it could let the smoke out.And you know it's best to keep the smoke inside.
Dimmer switch, best to keep a spare handy no matter the price.
Father-in-law got a box full of them years ago. All still in their little box as sold in stores. I carried one to the supply house I used at the time. Matched it up, I could get a carton of 120 for .69 each. They were selling at Central Hardware for $3.99.
