6.64 Update

Well me being the optimist I decided to give it a go against my better judgement. Because I am extremely disappointed in the 6.61 SI pic quality on my 1198, I figured it couldnt get worse. Well color me stupid. It locked it up tighter than a drum. Brand new unit only been on the water 5 times.
Pre fishing starts tomorrow. Tourney Sat. and get to run everything from the trolling motor unit I guess, so much for covering a lot of ground. To make matters worse I have it mounted in-dash. Some poor customers service rep aint gonna want to here from me tomorrow. But I am getting tired of these updates ever since the 360 and being a guinee pig. And just for the record, I have 4 units 898hd si, 858hd DI, 1198hd si, and 1158hd di. So I have done my share of updates, it is not like it was my first! OK that ends my rant.

Did it lock up during the update process?

Yep, did normal procedure I always do. Start unit, reset to fac defaults. Pop in card (freshly formatted) This is a higher version proceed (Yes) abort (No) and away she went. I gave up on it after 1 1/2 hours as I knew it was locked as I have never had one take more than 10 minutes.

Dang Hookit, sorry for the trouble! Now I am gun shy, or should I say Bird shy. Same problem as you and same thought, about what do I have to loose! Yikes!

Wow. I have loaded the updates on the SD card but didn't have time this evening. Might wait a few days now. Hope Humminbird can help without having to send unit in.

Gotta send it in just like a I figured! Requested that it come back with 6.49 loaded so we will see. Also requested that they send me 6.49 for my 1158. All I want is my crisp clear SI and DI back! Has anyone seen any clear good clear pictures we had with any of the updates since 6.49?

That's exactly why I haven't loaded any more updates. I am happy with my images and with the 898's features that are presently in it. So I'm not updating just because HB says its there to use. Until my units won't work good any more, my units are as updated as they are gonna get.

So if a guys was to purchase a 998 or 1198 what would it come with ? My wife would kill me if after dropping 2g the dang old thing didn't work like it should. She says I catch plenty now why do I need this high dollar equipment. I thought briefly about using the shoes purses angle. But last time she gave me the how many fishing poles you need check mate lol

This would depend on when the unit was actually manufactured ...and, more so...how long the unit has been sitting on the retailer's shelf...

The date of manufacture is in the serial number on the box (and the unit)...if you can get that info...

All this talk about bad updates has me spooked! All this rain has the lakes messed up . We have a fish kill nothing to bad but still. I'm sure plenty went over the spillway too as the lake was 4 feet over normal pool. I'll keep reading and checking hope they get it worked out.

There is nothing mandatory about updating a HB unit unless there is an accessory or feature that requires a certain version of software...

Just because the update is free and available doesn't mean the unit "positively must have" the update...

Read the description of the update and if there is nothing in it that fixes a problem in your specific unit...wait...

Dang. I just got a Ipilot Link for my B'day and had to do the latest updates for the trolling motor controller and the remote and the 858c. Was worried the whole time, but they all loaded and worked. Followed the order and descriptions in the update info box to the T. Now I got to get on the water and run the units through the paces to see if it all works as should. This was on a PD V2 trolling motor. Going to take a while to get used to NO foot pedal. Sorry to hijack, but not all HB updates are bad.

DO NOT GO THE SHOE/PURSE ROUTE ! I REPEAT DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WILL BE LOOKING AT A FLASHER !:Rofl

Any new reports on the updates ? In progress ? Problems solved ? I'm ready to spend the money for a new 1198 but still spooked. Talk to me HB crappie guru's

Gobob, I have been patiently waiting (that's almost over, the patient part) for an update to fix this mess. The only thing I can tell you is that if my units were stolen off my boat tonight, I would go buy the same exact units 1198/958 the next day. So I am grumpy at the current time, I also have a lot of faith they will get it right. I check almost everyday for a new update, but haven't seen anything yet! Some of these other guys may have better actual info on the progress being made on the fix by HB. That is one thing that I think would really help. A status page from HB, to keep us in the loop instead of just twisting in the wind with no idea.

It is very unlikely that we will hear anything "official" from HB about any software stuff before its released...that would cause even more uproar than what we hear now...

There are some that are actually saying their units are better with the new updates...this seems to indicate that the issues are "hit and miss" and impossible to nail down to any 1 setup ...(the variables are too variable...that sounds wierd...)

We can be sure that HB will release new versions...some will be good ...some maybe not so good...

We load new versions and experiment....if they're not so good...we wait some more...

I haven't really calculated the interval between releases but I have noticed they "seem" farther apart....

My guess is its getting more and more difficult for the programmers to incorporate the new accessories coming out and still keep the older units from "not playing well" with the new versions....

my new 998 is great si and very poor di. it's the latest version

Well finally updated my 958, 1198, ipilot and remote! Didn't fix my quality of images per Rickies thought! Did fix some other issues. I was bird shy but did it anyway, because of some ipilot over shooting issues. No problems encountered.

Hey Redge....post some screenshots of the new software from each unit....and zoom in on some vertical line in the image somewhere so we can see if the version is creating the "zigzagg sawblade effect" being reported on some of the other forums (and reported by me also)...

I think the zoom will increase whats in the zoom box 3 or 4 times Redge...

Activate the 4way cursor and move the cursor to an area of the image that would put any vertical line in the zoom box ...

Then start pressing the zoom button (+).... it will be obvious if the image has the zigzagg jigsaw blade effect ...
