I was fishing with my cousin today on Dardanelle when he got the call about this. This was one of his very close friends. Very sad deal.

This river claims lives every year, not one to mess around on, one of my best friends lost his brother-in-law and 16 year old nephew a couple years ago near burns park area, I never go on this river without a life jaket!!!
Hate to hear the bad news . Prayers sent .
Cprl. Spurlock said the lower unit appeared to have been hit by something and the boat ran out of fuel. Reminder to always use the kill switch as you never know when youre gonna smack somethin potentially throwin you out of the boat.
I used this story last night as a teaching point for my boys. They have both successfully completed boater's education, so I sat down with them and told them that a fisherman was lost on the river and that his boat had turned up without him.
The first two things out their mouths were lifejacket and kill switch.
According to the press reports a lifejacket was found in the empty boat. Also, as has been mentioned already, the engine had run out of fuel, indicating that either a kill switch wasn't present or it wasn't being used. According to the press, the boat sustained a collision, probably with a log, and it is presumed that the boater was thrown from the vessel.
This is a tragic and avoidable situation. It should serve to remind each of us that we should always expect the best but be prepared for the worst every time we go out on the water.
I would hate to leave my boys fatherless simply because I failed to follow basic safety protocol.
I saw that on the news last night. Horrible situation. It just takes a second to put on that vest and lanyard before you crank your motor. I used to never wear my vest and could have been in this same situation many times. Prayers for his family.
Praying for all
Prayers sent for him, his family, and friends. I lost a good friend in a very similar way on the white river.
News now says name is Mark Russell. I don't know him. His boat was up against dam. Flow has been fairly/medium high. I fear he went through the dam. I hurt for that family. Fishing is not supposed to be lethal or serious.
I've put in at that ramp a million times. I admit to not wearing my life jacket on Nimrod all the time, and a few other places. But when the boat motor starts on the Ark River, that life jacket is ON me!
A prayer for Mark Russell and one for the safety of all the rest of us as well. Carol and I have an Arkansas River at Toad Suck, story ourselves. Be safe everyone.
