Have a question about this jig. It is this, a Mayfly tied on a fly hook will be upright, but on a jig head it will be upside down so is this going to make a difference or is it, heck it's dead anyway under water and could be in any position and the fish would eat it?

If those are the premade tail just split a bit and mount it like a real mayfly tail and finish tying. some fly patterns have to be modified a bit to work on jigs and this is one of them. If you can find the really really small micro chenille you could twist it and then mount it on - the only problem with that is when you've spun it before you fold it back over itself to twist you have to use a needle to put the tail hairs in first. Splitting is alot easier!!!
So leave it on top like this or tie it with the hook upside down?
Skip I think I would bring the extended tail to the bend and tie it in there letting the tail run up toward the next bend going toward the hook point, still tying it to the bottom of the hook. It would look like the mayfly is sinking when the jig is turned up -right..

I saw mayflys today while crappie fishing the bank, I would like to give them a try I bet they will be great.
Thanks guys! Stump Hunter I never even thought of doing that and If I make one wrap at the bend it may bend that way by it self. Will play with it. Also have a bunch of other buggy bodies I need to try since I have had these for several years and never tied any until these, LOL!
Thinking I am about to get more of them too, I to think these will be killer and maybe get a few smaller ones for big blue gills? I am thinking a #8 hook would also be good for crappie on that smaller body. Going to try that too.

skip, your first pic is the one I'd go with, don't think that the bug being upside down will make a difference in fooling them. very nice tie, those mayflies come in different colors in the wild, around here I see alot of yellow ones.

what materials were used to make that beautiful jig.
Thread, pre-made Mayfly body and hackle I got from Whiting Farms in some of what they call Bugger Packs.
That is a great looking Mayfly. It should do really well once you get thru tweaking it into the final product. The ones I got to look at most were in Northern Ohio near Camp Perry. They were littered on the ground under a street light several inches thick, I guess they died flying around the light at night. The bodies were tan/brown in color and the wings were a dull white. Talking to a local they said that about anything with big white wings tied to it would do very well. With the #8 and the palmered collar and a light head it should sink slow and really hammer the gills. I caught a hatch once in FL and for 3 days I could do no wrong, 4th day it was all over. I caught more gills in those 3 days than any other time before or since. Real nice stuff, as always.
Thanks Skeet! I have been told ours here are big and yellow. I have something like 5 colors of these. Also have some a little shorter than this and some that are down right tiny, but again also have some called emerger Trailing Shuck. I defiantly need more education about these bugs.
