Hi Guys....I was wondering what inside jigheads(size/brand)you use for inch and a half tubes,I bought sixteenth ounce heads with a size 4 hook to use with the Southern Pro tubes I have and I can't get them rigged without butchering the tube.Also do any of you rig your hollow body tubes with round heads pushing them up to the head like you would a grub?I'm new to this and any help would be great.

That looks just like what I bought,I got the BPS inside tube jigheads made for the their squirt tubes.I tried to bring it up from the bottom of the tube(tenticle end)and it seem that the shaft that has the hook loop sticks up to far and won't let me get it threw the tube.Maybe I'm doing sometthing wrong rigging it.
I don't use the "insert" style jigheads, but there are many mfg's that do make them ... and they should slip right into a tube body, with no "butchering". Insert style heads are designed to slide inside the tube, then just push the line eye thru the tube. Round heads would have to be mighty small (light weight) to not do damage to a 1.5" tube ... probably something in the 1/32 or 1/64oz range.Quote:

Thanks for the replys...Hi Crappie Pappy,I normally use alot of grubs rigged with round heads coming in with the hook from the front and when I first got the tubes to try I rigged them just like I do a grub.I got some of the jigheads made for going inside the tube to try(they are sixteenth ounce and have a size 4 hook)from BPS and I must be doing something wrong because I can't get them in.
I use umbrella tubes and 1/8 th round headed jigheads. I mash the lead collar/barb down and lube them with fish formula or other oil. Still have to be gentle when pushing into large umbrella tubes. When I use 1/4 leadheads , I put them on like grubs or solid body lures.:D
When I rig an insert jig, I put a shot of liquid attractant or just wet the jig to make it slip in easier. I rarely tear one up when rigging. - Roberta
i don't like to use the inside head tube jigs because they have a tendency to tear easier when i catch fish :(
I agree with Ck14, I tear them up, But like Roberta, liquid fish sent works good as a lubricant.
is what I call it. I make a weedless head for tubes and have used them for years. You dont take the head through the tip of the tube but drop down on the side about 1/8 of a inch. Insert the hook point first and then the body is tapered so it will slide through the same hole the hook made. Then when you get up to the hook eye you just pop the end of the tube over the end of the head and all you can see is the line-tie/the weedgaurd/ and the business end of the whole deal. At first glance, you can not really tell that the hook is even in there. If you drop a drop of glue on the lead head before you pull the tip over it will last until they tear it off, and usually that is the tails that go first as the body will still be glued to the head itself. Everyone one laughed at me when I first hatched up this idea but years later they still come a bummin'...lol....my little brother says you can fish one of them through a wild rose bush and not get snagged....and he has the pics and the fillets to prove it...lol....I hope this helps and if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line and I will help anyway I can. Very nice explaination GF I rig mine the same way but not weedless. May have to try weedless.
GrouseFly is none other than Paul Mullins of P&S Custom Tackle .... THE man that makes all my weedless jigheads. He also makes some great looking, and productive, hair/feather/artificial material jigs ... and just about any other kind of "concoction" jig, that you can think of :p But, seriously folks ..... you want some fine, custom made jigs ... or weedless jigs ... give him a shout, tell him what you want/need, how you want it made, and give him some time to work it up !! You'll be glad you did !!

Grouse Fly has the right idea. I have been using insert heads with tube jigs for years this way. Never tear up a tube body this way. You can change colors
or put on a new body in 30 sec. or less. They hold up very well and body stays in place much better than using jig heads.

Thanks CP for the good words...I do the best I can for a one-man show...I have always used a insert head for tubes though. It just made more sense to me to hide the head instead of that big round knot on the end of my tube. That is just my opinion though and I know guys do different things. I always figured it was better to try to hide all the hardware I could for a more natural look. As for the roundheads and the eye size, I paint both and it is usually for the man more than it is for the fish. Some guys want a big eye and others want just a touch of a eye. When it comes to colors, it's like a woman buying a dress. The more colors you have to more you want, and trust me, some guys have a WIDE color range. Some work, some don't but you have to try to see. When it comes to crappie, COLOR is what makes the world go around.........Good Fishin'....The G-Fly
:cool:I've never really gotten into using "insert" jigheads. On my jighead/plastics rigs .... I've always used a weedless jighead, and threaded the plastic onto the hook. I mostly use tubes and Panfish Assassins. I use the tubes for straight casting/retrieving (swimming the jig) ... and the PA's for shooting docks (they skip better). I've never been concerned about whether or not the jig has an "eye" painted on it ... as I mostly use unpainted heads.Quote:

GrouseFly has me pegged :D ... I'm one of those guys that "does different things". Actually, I haven't bought or won or had given to me, ANY jig that didn't catch Crappie (of the ones I've used) :eek: I've known times when color meant catching or not ... and times when it didn't matter. But, IN ALL CASES, it's always been "location, presentation, & speed" that were the primary factors in whether or not I caught fish. Color was just a "fine tuning" factor (for visability, under the current water clarity conditions) ... whether or not the jighead had a white eye, red eye, big eye, little eye, black eye, or the pinkeye ........ never entered the equation :D
If you've got confidence that a certain size or color of eye, on your jighead, is going to produce better for you ........ go for it. Even if it really doesn't matter to the Crappie ... you will fish it "better" (with confidence) and probably catch those fish. I really don't see any reason why a Crappie would turn its nose up at a jig ... just because it had too big, too small, or the wrong color eye. They certainly don't seem to mind hitting my "eyeless" ones ..... :p
