Had a HDS5 on my last rig.It was great.Have hummingbirds now. find the hb easier to use. Liked the lowrance hds graph better. just my opinion.
I have one on my boat, wife bought it for me this Christmas, now my son and I have been out fishing and he showed me some things on it, using the plotter to get to the mats faster etc...he also loves it...I do a variety of fishing long lining, spider riggin and one pole hand fishing and find it works great in all three aspects. No I don't have any of the maps on it just using what comes with the unit.
I have the Elite 5 DSI. Installed it last Fall and love it. Great detail. I have the sensitivity set so I can actually see my bait below along with it's movement. Clear in bright sunlight as well. The Navionics chip I have with it has 1 foot contours for Toledo Bend. There's a sticky in the fishing electronics forum about this specific unit - a very good read.
Thanks always been a fan of Lowrance and now that its on sale I think I'm gonna take the plunge and get one.
Where is it on Sale?
Cabelas only on line with Cabelas Club Card
I did some research; it seems like a good unit. Cabelas Club price is $399; you can buy it new on e-bay for $326. I've been wanting a down imaging unit; this may be the one.
My bad; that was the 5x; the 5 is $362........
I have the 7x and like it.I'd suggest getting the 7 because size DOES matter ! hahahaha
Pm sent
The Elite 5 DSI is a perfect size for me. I've seen folks riding around with what looks like flat screen TV's. Some are downright obnoxious. I, for one, don't think it's necessary. Then again, to each his own. Guys, I think the unit is a good buy.
If I had money to blow or fished for a living I think I would invest in a bigger model but its just not worth it to me right now. I catch all the fish I can eat and then some I just really want to key in on bigger fish and maybe have a little help on those slow days, plus I am planning on putting out some brush piles and I want the GPS to mark and find them. I sure appreciate all the help and opinions it makes the purchase a little easier.:biggrin
:ThumbsUp I understand what you are saying.
Prowler, replied to your pm about the Navionics card.
The larger screen is not worth much in 2d sonar...the difference is noticed in down imaging and/or split screen modes. If you are looking for better fish then you are looking for better detail of the bottom/structure and cover which the 7 provides.
I have one but I can't get a good image on the dang thing, any suggestions to dial that thing in?
Check out the member sponsors. I just ordered mine from one on site that matched or beat every price I have found on-line or anywhere else. I haven't recieved it yet I just ordered it on Fri. Have them give you a quote.
Drop a jig or weight below the transducer. Adjust the surface clarity, contrast, and color pallets (blue works best for me) until you can see the jig/weight. As the screen scrolls you will see a line. When you move your jig/weight, the scrolling line will adjust to that depth as well. That's what I did, and have very good clarity of tree branches, etc. now.
Well its on the way can't wait to play with it and learn a little something.
There you go. I rigged it up in my shop and played with it extensively to get a feel for it before installing it on the boat. Let us know if you have any questions/problems.
Thanks I'm sure I will have plenty. Now I need to start on my bamboo condos.
Mine will be here today! Just like Christmas.
Anyone considering buying, or those who have already purchased this unit (Lowrance Elite 5 DSI/Chartplotter ) .... you might want to look through this thread : http://www.crappie.com/crappie/fishi...rtplotter.html
Yes, it is a long read, but we're trying to keep our discoveries & tips on this unit confined to this one thread, rather than have them scattered throughout the site. You are encouraged to join in the discussion, whether it be questions you might have or things you've learned about the unit.

Uh Oh It's dad....HIDE!!
rotfl That's the truth, too funny. I enjoyed that post, laughed out loud because I know. Tal, I see you have been to the outer limits of this forum to see folks like me having a battle of wits with folks. Seriously though, the man started a great post about this unit, now a sticky there. I have my questions/comments in there as well. And have had them been addressed.
i just got a elite 5 dsi trying to see what maps to buy. the one in it doesn't have all the river & bayous in south Louisiana.
You may get a better response if you start another thread specifically about maps. With that said, I have the same unit with the standard map loaded on it. As you stated, it doesn't recognize a lot of smaller waters. Most of the mapping software will offer specifics as for which lakes are on it, if you look online. I haven't been pleased with any of the one's I've looked at, thus haven't purchased any.
It really works I can set it and see a 1/16 jigs path as it goes through the transducer cone. It shows all the stems of the hyrilla on the bottom of Henderson you would not believe how much grass is under you that you can't see from up top. I love having the time, depth and boat speed on screen also. Still learning how to use it though lots of bells and whistles.
I have this one on my console for long lining unmarked areas. GPS navigation does well as long as you're moving at a decent speed. Not as fast as a HDS when creeping along, so there's a little lag when pushing slow off the front.
Does this unit have side imaging as well.
No it doesn't. Just DSI and GPS. They discontinued the unit when they brought out the Elite 5 HDI which also includes sonar. Love mine though, have it tuned in like crappiecatcher06 to see everything, wouldn't have use for the sonar since I learned how to read the DSI.
how do you start a new thread
best maps for south Louisiana
From the Louisiana page, you will see a 'Post New Thread' button. see picture below.
