Nice! My late brother and I would catch hundreds this way when I was in my teens. Thanks for the memories.

A couple more tips for nighttime crawler catching:

Worms love garden soil and beneath fruit trees.

Use a red light, it's less harsh and doesn't startle the worms as much. Headworn lights work great.

The lighter part of the worm is nearest the hole. Aim for that.

Keep the light off the worm once you see one. Keeping the edge of the beam on the end closest the hole.

Move in close slowly, use a flat hand, and QUICKLY yet GENTLY slap down on the end nearest the hole. Don't try to pinch or grab, they'll usually slip right out. A flat hand pins them down, then you can grab em and wiggle them free.

Here in Tennessee we don't have night crawlers. I remember catching them when I was a kid. Use to sell them to.

Thanks for the memories. When I was young (55-60 years ago) my dad would water the lawn late in the afternoon. Once the sun went down, he would stick an electric prod in the ground. The nightcrawlers would almost shoot out of the ground.

great story i like to use bucket of water and add some dish soap and and pour in over area known to have worms like under my tree and collect them as they come out of the ground

Great story. I used to dig them up, from the spot where we dumped the leaves we raked up.

We went to the mountain and moved some leaves around and got some worms and put them in a bucket and threw some leaves in with them. when we got back home and took the lid off, a small snake came out of the bucket, must have been in the leaves.

Great story. I too have been finding alot of worms out in my yard and my grandkids love finding them. Found some really big uns after last round of rain. Collectin em for grandkids to go bream fishin. We in west TN. Thanks!

Ha! Good read, brings back alot of memories of worm hunting with my son and friends from way back.

I always had a lot of fun catching worms when I was younger. Was a great way to spend Friday night, Then got to fish all weekend.

While living in upstate NY years ago my brothers and I would take our old D-cell flashlights out with the incandescent bulbs and we would wrap the lens in wax paper to calm down the brightness of the light. Now like the rest of you we would wait till it had rained all day and the night crawlers would be everywhere...the old house had a basement so I kept the worms in my home made box till fishing time...what at time those days were ...

now to the present...up at the lake house we just move some rocks and BAM there they are those little wigglers...OUCH...it just bit me...

For all who hunt the elusive earthworms; be cautious when doing so with young ones and make sure it is a worm and not the serpent.
