Anybody ever fish the horseshoe lake inside Rainey Brake? Not sure of what the name of it is.
No didn't forget, tapatalk needs updated, had to go the long way around to get picture.
that's the name of it. horseshoe lake and it is a complete circle. the last time i fished it was summer before last and may be the last time i ever fish it i saw a rattle snake swim behind my boat bout 20 ft. had it's head up out of the water and tail straight up out of the water and was on top of the water just like a cotton mouth swims if you've ever seen a cotton mouth in the water. don't know if i could fish that place again without having to watch all around the boat for rattle snakes. it looks like the picture turtle has his fish at. that place round that lake is covered up with rattle snakes. a man that cut timber for me on the farm cut timber for the game and fish on raney brake and said they killed 154 timber rattlers while cutting the timber there. and yes, i know you aren't supposed to kill snakes but they can't get that man. he's no longer living. the only time you can kill a snake is when it threatens you. they all threaten me.
I've seen plenty of cottonmouths. Not very many rattlesnakes. I used to have a good spot bank fishing for crappie in the spring on languille river. I wont go back to it because of the number of cottonmouths we would see up close. Was the fishing any good? I dont mind the snakes near as much if I'm in the boat.
a few years back i did good on both bass and crappie. not so good the last couple of years i fished it other than a couple of bream fishing trips. catch'em bedding and it can get real good for them. it has some over a pound shell crackers in it. i got into a bed probably half way round the thing. set in that one spot and caught the limit of good bream and even better shell crackers. sounds like we are losing all our old fishing places. fished horners and shireys both probably over 50 years ago. an old man lived on the bank of shireys and rented wooden boats for i think a 1.00 a day.
We don't live in a good part of the state for fishing. Sure wish there were some big lakes nearby.
Horseshoe has filled in over the years and not ever deep when at normal pool, wish they would fix the dam better to hold more water. In the summer months its hard to get around even with the tm raised up you'll stir up mud.All the fish have gotten smaller and fewer of them, from the look of things its going to be covered up in duckweed this year.
Oldduckhunter if you talking about just around the bend in the straight away north of the ramp I haven't found the bream there in the last three years. After the big flood a few years ago I caught two flyers out of it which I released them back but haven't caught another, pretty fish.
I like fishing big and little horseshoe south of newport but they too are now posted,BIG crackers in there.
Big lakes,at one time they where talking about daming up strawberry river to make a lake almost as big as north fork.Never did find out why they decided not to,wish they would have buildit it,we could of had a smallmouth lake and crappie big as basketballs.
at one time they also talked bout daming 5 of the big creeks running into spring river. that would have been great. now it costs too much money to do anything. they can't even finish the bono lake. i bet it will be another mudhole like frierson.
That would have been great to dam up strawberry or spring river. Sure wish they would do something. Even a lake half the size of Norfork would be great. The Bono lake will probably be like Frierson, and stay muddy all the time.
it needed to have been said at least twice.
Oldduckhunter can any of the water sheild lakes on copper creek be fished?
turtle, don't know where copper creek is. that's a new one on me.
If I spell it right you may know...watershed....cooper creek the one you cross east of town.
thank the names of them are west, east, dogwood, machine,Goff and Ed's lake.Back years ago I fished the one east of annieville,Dent white had cattle up the
the one east of imboden is hardin creek. i forget the one just west of the bridge then janes creek that runs in across from the farm here then one just outside of ravenden then martin creek west of ravenden. from there i don't know the names of them. the one that runs into the river through the farm here has no name. there is a small lake, private, up by watagua springs but i think it's spring fed.
I used to wade fish James creek and wells creek, learned on wells creek if lure gets hung on electric fence what crosses the creek just don't wade up there and grab hold of your lure while standing knee deep in water.
i called it james creek forever turtle till i moved up hear. i found it's janes creek. people still wade fish them. but i don't think they mess with the lectric fences. i figure they all be up and muddy this morning. i know the one here on the farm is over the road . the county won't fix it right.
Nice Fish Turtle.
They also tried to dam up the 11 point river also.
with a big lake we could have a situation like around Norfork and Bull Shoals, lots more retired yankees and californians...I am not for damning any natural river...just saying be careful about what you wish for...
daming the creeks would have been good had they done it back then. it was in the late 50's or early 60's they had drawn all the plans up then it all fell through. it would still be a good thing only a lot more expensive now. there would haved been 5 more "lake charles'."
Just got back from Shirey Bay. The fish that we did manage to catch (not many either) were out in about 12' of water about 4' deep. The water was really high, the ramp was almost completely submerged, but you could see your jig almost two foot down. It was really pretty.
I got 4"s of rain today. I bet all the bays off black river will be high and muddy for a while.
Before the rain last night and all day today most all oxbows off black where bank full and clear ecpect portia bay was muddy on the upper end.The run off from this rain isn't as muddy as you may think b/c alot of farm land was still packed from the last rain.Alot of road ditches around here are fairly clear and a few look like mud balls. The bays may clear fairly fast if we don't get alot of rain saturaday and sunday,we have a chance of snow in the morning if so it will help clear up the water.
htr, it ain't falling. We ended up with almost 5" of rain, so the Black should get out of its banks, it was already close. As far as the spawn, the surface temp was 63 degrees, and its the first week in May,with all this roller coaster weather, my opinion (and thats all it is) , we won't see a spawn.
