I was wondering if anyone had any advise for a guy who just turned on to crappie. I have caught crappie before but it was not the fish I was fishing for. I have found these to be very tasty and fun to catch. So any words for a newbe??

just keep reading on here and dont give up , i try all the time and can catch a few but not like some of these guys :fish

2. Use Both Jigs and minnows
3. Have a good depth finder with a transducer up front on your trolling Motor.

I'm just getting into crappie myself... and I am certainly what I'd call a beginner... but I read just about every post on this site, and have learned a lot. One thing I would suggest NOT doing is to try to buy every size, color, type of jig in the world. I probably spent spent a lot more than I ever needed to. If I did it over again, I'd buy a couple of crappie magnets, a couple of meatgetters, and a couple of midsouth tubes. I'd just pick a few colors focusing on chartreuse combo'd with white/black/you-name-it. To gain confidence I usually start out with minnows, and when I've managed to find some crappie, I've then experimented with different jigs. Sure enough, if you put them at the right depth in the right cover, they catch fish. I can't say one type is better than any other. Doing this has given me the needed confidence to fish with jigs. I usually use a casting setup and cast upstream of the targeted cover with a slip bobber holding the terminal tackle at the chosen depth and let the current take the bait into the strike zone. I've started to try some jigging with a jigging pole, but I don't claim to have mastered that technique at all, but I'm learning :) (There's a good post started by CMJ on this topic).
Now this is a beginner's experience, so take it with a grain of salt. When I first started, man, I had (still have) lots of skunk days.. but the last few trips, I've managed to find some and have a little success. The reason for that is what I've learned reading posts here. I don't have fancy electronics, but a cheapo depth finder that may/may not show underwater cover well. But by reading lots of posts, I'm starting to learn where to start looking and that's half the battle.
There's lots of knowledge on this site to be gleamed, and plenty of other topics to laugh at and be entertained by :)
Best advice I got for a new crappie fisherman at this time...
buy some golf clubs! Good luck man, hang in there, crappie fishin' you can go from zero to hero in five minutes, and it could be the last five.
Here's my 2 cents. One important thing to learn about crappie fishing is learning how to use your electronics. Depth finders and learning how and where to find natural and man made brush tops and ledges is the first secret to catching crappie. You don't have to buy a really expensive FF but try to get the best you can afford. Like everyone has said read these posts and take it to the water. What kind of crappie fishing seems to interest you, spider rigging, jigging, casting, trolling?

Welcome from Marion.....don't use a minner without a critter and always have bino's with you!! Seriously, there is a bunch of great people on here that will help. Just find someone close to your area and go fishing with them......
2 years ago I owned 1 boat and 4 poles.....now I have 2 boats and 20 poles. Hope you got a deep wallet!!:biggrin

Shoot some folks on here that you think you could get along with a pm and see if you can go fishing with them. Experience is something earned over many many years but you can curb that learning curve if you get hands on training by an experienced crappie fisherman!
I would suggest ignoring all the people with less than 2500 post. They probably are just learning themselves. I would also suggest ignoring all the people with more than 2600 post cause they are spending way too much time on the internet to know how to fish. My tip of the day... dennimite is your friend and short fuses work well during the spawn. When using this often over looked technique, pay attention to wind direction, and make sure your boat is at least quartering away from the target before lighting and launching.
