I just got a hb 998 and I am having some difficulty understanding how to set the GPS up. I am planning on installing it inches away from my unit so other then drill a hole and screw the GPS into it, is all I have to do is plug the GPS into the unit? Or do I need to wire the power and ground into the boat wiring? I don't understand the manuals descriptions on how to do it
I've run the 997,1197 and currently run the 898..partner uses the 1198..and all the unit's just plug-in and play for your G.P.S....I personally have the head unit and the gps units very close to each other without a problem...partners boat has three different g.p.s. units...runs a plotter,depth finder and 1 as a spare to use in case of emergency..wiring nightmare if you've seen it..:twocents

For the best accuracy of marking (and returning to) waypoints...the GPS antenna should be as close to the Xducer as possible...
The horizontal distance between what the Xducer is "seeing under it" and the satillites the GPS antenna is "seeing above it" instills an automatic distance discrepancy in the structure you are marking under the boat in relation to the waypoint coordinates you are logging onto the chartplotter's map...

And Professor is correct in that the puck is plug and play...(unless you are networking more than one unit and you want a remote head unit to share the GPS antenna with the base unit...this would require some extra menu changes)...

This may be a dumb question, and I don't mean to highjack the thread, but if the 998 comes with GPS, why add the additional puck? Do you feel it improves the accuracy?
Rickie, I bought this unit because I am serious In regards to wanting to use and understand side imaging. I understand the concept of side imaging but I was wondering if you could show me they way as far as settings set points (noise, sensitivity, surface clutter ect.... ). For this unit.

Some things not covered in the Robert's link...
*Color Pallete will be different according to the ambient light at the time...experiment with different pallette choices thruout the day to see which looks better to your eyes at the time....(I like Inverse for cloudy days and blue or green for bright sunny days)...
*Overlay the "SI Enhance" menu onto the SI image to give instant access to several settings to play with...
*Higher "Sharpness" will make the image grainy but also make fish echos pop out on the screen...
*"Contrast" somewhere between 9-12 according to how much pixilation you can tolerate in the image...
*"Sensitivity" use as a brightness controll for the image...(this is the most used setting on my unit because deeper water will make the image darker-raise "Sensitivity"... Dirty water will darken the image-raise "Sensitivity"....softer bottom will make the image darker-raise "Sensitivity"...
Setting the SI display to 1 side only will in effect "zoom" the view of that side...(I use this scanning parallel to the bank looking for bream beds)...
Use 800kHz for best image detail of objects you want to discern under the Xducer...(image will be crisper but outside edges of image will be darker)
Use 455kHz for wanting to see objects farther out to the sides...(outside edges of image will be brighter but overall image will be fuzzier)...
Ask lots of questions....

(DI in the HB SI series unit is a computer generated image from data received by the SI crystals..it is very unlikely you will ever get satisfactory DI images in the 998)...
I'm curious as to why you use a switch instead of the AS SIDB Y cable for a separate 2d xducer....??

about the switch I thought that's what I needed to go between 2 different transducers .And I didn't know the di on a 998 hd si wasn't true DI ,
There's actually nothing wrong with using a switch to use the HDSI xducer and a separate 2d xducer...Quote:

On another note...(DI note)...there are some that say they get satisfactory results with the DI in their SI series units...
Myself...I keep all my DI views hidden because I find them pretty much unsatisfactory...
But then...I did not buy my 1197 for the DI...I just don't find that technology very useful for my style of fishing...
Everyone's needs are different and each have their own desires of the tools/technologies needed for their own style of fishing...
If I ever decide that DI may help in some aspect of my fishing...I will probably Ethernet a 858 or 958 "Dedicated DI" unit to my 1197...

I like looking at the structure Im running over ,and I cant really tell what im seeing a lot of times on the 2d ,I love my 998 ,and the depth doesn't read good at around 30 mph ,so I use the 2d transducer off my 788ci on the transom and can not network the 2 because its not an hd unit .Ive got a quad beam ducer for my I=pilot and use and use it on 2d also ,guess Im still in the learning process .
Just bought a new 998 hd and going to run it as a dedicated si and my current 858c di for 2d & di needs. Both to be at the console. Thought about adding a strictly 2d transducer then using Y cable
