How big a fish you fishing for? I like 2/0-4/0 circle hooks for fish up to about 10 pounds. If fishing for larger just go up a size or two. I use a 1/4 to 3/8 oz. Just enough to get bait down and keep it from floating up if wind is blowing noodle along. 8-12 in noodle.
I agree with the 4/0 circles. Seems to work the best for me. Will catch anything.
I promise, when you get into them and have 5 or 6 running in different directions at the same time you will be hooked. I'm not a big Cat fisherman but go with neighbor sometimes. When it's on it will wear you out chasing them noodles around. Also a great way to entertain a couple of kids and ger some fish to boot. Good luck.
I use 5/0 circle hooks and have no complaints about the size of fish they catch. Big or little makes no difference. Very enjoyable with the grand kids.
If you can find them use the noodles that are 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter. You will get a better hookset that way.
Set out two noodles today, caught one stick and a small 8" cat....
I use 4/0 also, but my noodles are weighted.
I use 6/0 eagle claw stainless steel hooks and use old cast net weights. I catch fish from half a pound on into the 30's and 40's.
What pound test and type of line do yall use?
I use white or black nylon twine. You can get rolls of it at most sporting good stores. I think the size is usually get is #36.
I favor braided over twisted line. I use 150 to 200 lb test braided with a 5/0 stainless steel hook.
One more question. Do any of yall use a weight inside of your pvc to show noodles that may have had a strike but no hook up with a fish? The way I saw it done was to cut a 4-5" piece of re-bar and seal inside of the pvc pipe. Supposedly if a fish tugs on the bait it will stand up the noodle, so if it's up and not moving around, a fish may have taken your bait off.
Never heard of that but it does sound like a neat little trick.
Erin, check out YouTube couple of good videos on how to build those with rebar so they stay tripped when hit.
Just curious what kind of bait do yall use most of the time?
It's a personal preference, but I don't have weights in my noodles, The guy I sometimes fish with does and I don't like them. If you get a bite and the fish doesn't get hooked the noodle will stand up anyway. If you are fishing in current and it drags bottom it will stand up. You will be checking standing noodles all day. Just my opinion.
I started to weight mine down, because I use live bait mostly. I started noticing that the bait would swim to the surface a lot of times. Weight isn't really needed if you're not using live bait.
