Nice layout. Finally got most of mine planted, all I lack is the corn which will go in this weekend. Thanks for posting.
I've got mine planted too but Old Man Winter is playing hell with it. My early garden, onions and sweet peas, are doing well. My snap beans got hit by a frost and I had to replant them. Then the replants got hit a little by frost which burnt the leaves a little but they are still growing and some have flowers. It's been a tough Spring, cold and dry. Night before we got 4 inches of rain that we needed badly, I'm sure that will help everything. Glad to hear about others that plant gardens, to me gardening and growing fig trees is almost as much fun as fishing.

Sweet peas, you can see how dry it was by the cracks in the ground.

Nice garden Gene. The cold snap did get to my cucumbers, so they were replanted. Looks like I'm going to have some serious peaches this year as well. I'll take some pictures of my garden and trees this weekend. I'm ready for some fresh home grown produce.
PPG my neighbor has 2 pear trees and a nice fig tree that I maintain. She wants nothing to do with them. I usually send her old Dad a couple pints of fig preserves and mostly give away the pears. I also finally planted today. I reduced the size of my garden this year and did not plant beans. I'll take pictures in a few days when things start standing up better. I plant my okra with last years seeds , so that will be a while. But they sure have produced well in the past. Crappiecatcher06, may I ask what the pvc around the plants is for? Danny
The PVC helps against cut worms and wind when plants are young I used gallon cans in the past
I'm planning on planting this weekend .. Been putting it off with this weather, but I got the itch and I gotta scratch it
Plants really growing now between rain and warm weather they are taking off. Will post a pic tomorrow.
Took picture of my little garden. Reduced size a little this year. Okra breaking through but so little can't see on photo yet. I have 4 tomatoes, 3 bell peppers, 2 eggplants. 2 yellow squash, 2 zuchini, one cucumber(about six seeds, first try on this) and 6 okra. Usually plenty for us. I'll have to hit the veg. stand for snap beans and purple hulls. DannyAttachment 122763
Nice little garden Danny. Good thing it's in that fenced back yard, otherwise the rabbits would get to it. I have a two foot rabbit fence around mine. Only 4 tomato plants? We had six last year and it wasn't enough. Love fresh maters sliced every night during the season. Also went to six cucumbers this year for the same reason. All my bell peppers are the red type, and I do two plantings with the potatoes during the season. Red potatoes are about a foot tall now. Once harvested, I'll plant sweet potatoes for the Fall. Corn is planted and is now popping up. All citrus trees are good, and it appears I may have avocados this year as well! I planted a certain type of avocado tree that should do well here in south LA a couple of years ago. Appears the buds on it are set finally. Love those things, slice them and eat them like candy. Thanks for the post my friend. As Gene said, almost as fun as fishing.
I used to plant large when I was young.Just got back into last 3 yrs. With the camp and camper, I don't want to spend more time on a garden than I do, but fresh is better. Wish I had some rabbits try and get to it, but none around. They are good smothered down, with fresh vegetables on the side. :yikes A 30 x 60 plot full. I don't eat cuc's,(rimes with:puke) doing that just for Mae. Now I do miss the corn, and to grow your own avocado's is awesome. I love them myself. Also, if you can grow a ribeye tree, I'm coming over!!rotfl
PPG, may I ask sir, what will a man do with 100 plus young fig trees? Are you planning to corner the market?
Well plants have trippled in size despite the weather they are getting there. Need rain to stop so I can pull my rows up again.

You are making progress Mike. Looks good.
Freebird, that's a dang good question but I don't have a answer. But I will say this, some of those trees have recently sold for $400 on ebay. So maybe it's an investment.

Well the goodies are starting to come in. Yesterday I picked some sweet peas and shelled them and today I picked a mess of snapbeans. I should have a great supper tonight.

Sweet peas, sorry for blurred picture.

Talk about nice Gene! Love the pics, thanks. That sure will be excellant as you said. Do you like perserved blackberry jam? I jar up several each year. Gave Danny a jar last month when we met. Recently traded some with a friend of Ann who tapped their maple trees to make their own syrup in Vermont. That was excellent on her biscuits and sausage. If you jar up preservered figs, would love to have some. If you want to trade, let me know (not the maple syrup though, it stays here :))? Thanks for posting.
Randy, if I make a crop there will be fig perserves and yes you can have some. Last year because of the rain I lost most of my figs. I was able to just get enough to make a few jars of perserves and let me tell you we treat them like gold. I think I have 3 left which should just about make it to fig season. We love the figs during the winter with breakfast. They go great with bacon and eggs with toast or biscuits on the side. Now I know what I'm having for breakfast in the morning.
The snap beans we had for supper tonight and I'm disappointed with them. They are a new bean I was trying out but to put it bluntly, they weren't worth a hill of beans. They were tough and rather tasteless and I won't plant them again. We love our Contenders but I always try something new each year. I have plenty of Contenders coming in about 2 weeks. I also plant them in the fall. I must say the sweet peas were great. I only tasted as they are for tomorrow's lunch.
Take care and I see figs in your future,

PawPaw " gene" those peas and beans look good but all that talk about figs, jam and biscuts is making me hungry.
Great thread. I'm getting started up here. Still cool.
Onions ready to pull:

These are the fruit off of a prickly pear. Once they bloom, and turn red - makes some serious jelly. They are called tunas.

Thanks for looking :).
Randy is that a question on the onions, the look like they have a way to go if those are bulbing onions. With bulbing onions you need to wait for the tops to start drying, that's a sign that all the good stuff in the leaves are going into the bulb to be stored.
I have someone who promised me a prickly pear that has soft seed which makes them very good to eat raw. I ate some this summer on my trip to CA.
Does Ernie obey that sign.

Hi PawPaw Gene - Ann here :) We set the onions out in the fall and use the tops for cooking, salads, etc. We dig them up in the spring, cut the tops off and let them dry. Then they are good for another year. Very good point about the onions. I didn't know how to grow big ones. No, Ernie does not obey the sign, but I'm good at catching the dirty dogs when they come in. LOL. Soft seed in a prickly pear, bet that is good.
Hi Ann, thanks for the reply. I grow my onions from seeds that I plant in October. Then in January I pull them, trim the roots and tops, and then plant them on the rows. It will be a least another month before they are ready. Right now they are about 3 inches across. These sometimes grow to 5 inches and are the sweetest onions I've ever eaten.
I sure hope my contact does come through with the prickly pear. He also has some that are spineless. I will also try to get some of those from him.
Take care,
"gene"
Ann again.... where do you get your seeds and what variety are they? You need to get Randy to send you some prickley pear jelly. Looks like we'll have a good crop this year.
PawPaw I had a bunch of prickly pear by my camp last year and they were purple as can be. I heard you could eat them so I tried one but they were not very sweet. I'm curious how the jelly would taste
The way I understand it not all of them are great tasting. The soft seeded ones I'm talking about will come from California where they are picked in the wild. This person has a dozen varieties of good tasting ones. If I can get my hands on any I will let you know.

We are getting there slow but sure

Nice! Mine is slow going, cucumbers didn't like the cold once again. Corn has popped up, potatoes are getting bigger each day, the herbs are ready to be trimmed and put in the dehydrator, tomatoes doing well . I'll post the progress pictures this weekend. This working man gets home late. Thanks for the posts guys, I really enjoy them.
PawPaw "gene" those beans and onions are beautiful, I can see them now bacon all cooked down with those beautiful onions and those beans added the last 15 minutes until warmed through served with a nice steak and baked potato. Oh so good!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice pic and pickings CC06. My garden did noT get much attention this year. I will probably get out of the gardening. To many irons. Did get some nice tomatoes, squash and zucchini. Got a few bell peppers, and a couple eggplants and cucumbers. No okra at all. I know you guys probably think I'm crazy, but I'll hit the veg. stand next year. Danny
