They do allow you see down in the water a little deeper than non polarized or the naked eye, but the biggest benefit is the way they cut the glare off the water. They can prevent a headache on a really bright sunny day on the water.
At least that is my impression of them.
Oh, sometimes it is hard to read the FF screen with them on.

They are important to me, as having sharp hooks. Never fish without them. As Searay mentioned, may have to take them off to get a good look at the graph. Spend some money on a decent pair, not from Walmart.
GOOD polarized glasses allow me to see down into the water. They are essential to me.
Was looking at a pair of XPS from BassPro Shop... just wanted to be an educated buyer. LOL.
The main thing is they cut down on the glare which really bothers me and enables me to see further into the water. I spent decent coinage for the ones I have and I always use them when fishing.
I have been using polarized prescription sun glasses for years and love them. They
are also bi-focal which really helps in threading a hook.
Polarized for me as well. After wearing them for years I tried to save some money and try some standard lenses..mistake! If you are going to be on the water a lot, the investment is well worth the money. In my years of bass fishing for bedding fish in the spring they really helped, but the main benefit is cutting down the glare off the water as others here have stated.
You will always want polarized glasses while on the water. I had a pair of Costa Delmar prescription glasses for years and loved them. Finally after a couple of prescription changes I've changed to the Cocoons so I don't have to change prescription on both pairs.
Fishing submerged tree tops with a friend one day I was able to see the tree tops much better and further away than he could with his sun glasses and he was 20 years younger than I. I'm not sure his sunglasses were polarized but he was sure impressed when he tried on my Cocoons.
You didn't indicate whether you wore prescription glasses or not but those Cocoons can be used with out wearing them over prescription glasses and I noticed those BPS XPS glasses were more expensive than the Cocoons.

I wouldn't go without them!
They are well worth the money.....cuts way down on the glare and allows you to see submerged cover and sometimes fish better than non-polarized. As was also noted, the only drawback is they make the ff screen hard to see at times, depending on how the sun is hitting the screen.
Not only do they help with the glare and allow you see a little better in the water but they PROTECT your eyes as well. My father lost his left eye due to cancer. The doctors told him that it was from the many of years being on the water and outside without using any sunglasses. After this I don't mind spending money on a good pair of sunglasses for my family.
I wear polarized prescription glasses. Absolutely essential to me.
They not only help in fishing but if you try them while driving you won't leave home without them. As Wooduckn said they help with eye health also. My eye Dr. Explained that glare off the water will will also accelerate the formation of cataracts.
Kinda like a car buy a yugo and it will get you there but buy a cadillac and your ride is much more enjoyable and will last longer. I buy what i can afford and take care of them they take care my eyes which i need to last a long time.
I keep a pair in the boat all the time. I keep them in a hard case made for glasses. I wear them anytime the sun is shining and often when running across the lake. They keep the cold air and spray out of my eyes. As already stated, they are great for cutting the glare off the water, even when you are not trying to look down into the water. Mine are cheapies and work fine- I've never bought or worn an expensive pair to compare to.
I always wear polarized sun glasses on the water. Sometimes even when it is not sunny. Yes, they do protect your eyes, i.e., radiation, bugs, limbs, what have you, ect.,ect.,! I sure can see structure better with them than without them! I wear a pair of Dewalt sun glasses, and always keep a cheap pair in the tackle box just in case I need them or someone I am fishing with does. I consider them a very vital piece of my fishing gear!
I wear a pair of Costa Del Mar glasses anytime I am outdoors. I try not to do anything outdoors without them. I have gotten so used to them, I almost can't function without them. In the muddy lakes I fish, it helps me see 50 to 75% more structure just below the surface, and sometimes spot shallow fish. You can get a pair for cheap and they will work, but as stated earlier, a quality pair will LAST. Have had mine since 2009 and still in great shape.
Used to always have a cheap pair around. Having light colored eyes the sun/ glare will give me horrific headaches. I eventually dropped the coin on a pair of Costa Del Mars after looking through a pair of my co workers for about an hour. Totally different then the cheapies. I have had this pair of CDMs since 2009 as well, they initially cost me $300, and in 2011 I sent them in to be relensed, that was $70. So $370 total for 4 years of service, I would have went through more then that in cheap sunglasses.
Since I scratched them though and had to send them in I bought a pair of Oakley polarized glasses. They filled in while my CDMs were being fixed and moved on to my work glasses as they are ANSI Z87.1 certified.
I have 3 high end pair of polarized glasses that I wouldn't be caught on the water without... until I got a finder with the purple antireflective coating on the screen. The glasses make it impossible to see the screen. It completely blacks out.
Top quality polarized glasses never leave my face or neck until dark, fishing or not. When fishing, absolutely essential.
I wear prescription glasses, so I use a pair of Vistana fitovers. Tried the Cocoons, but the bar on the sides drove me nuts. The Vistanas have wraparound lenses and fit well over my glasses.
what's the best color lense's pm me
This lake was a National Forrest before they built the dam and flooded it, so there are a lot of standing timber, some sticking above the water and lots not and seeing them is a huge help trolling and without my Polarized glasses there is no way to see what I can with them. Also if you want to see any fish on beds or any number of things under water, you need them or at least I do.
I also wear a pair of Costa Del Mar glasses anytime I am outdoors. Probably the best sun glasses I ever had. I had to get implants in my eyes so don't need Rx glasses any more, but use to have Rx progressive polarized sunglasses as I needed bifocals back then too.
just ordered cocoon's pilot's black / gray any comments
good deal, I'm glad they're good one. fished today 9 keeper over 11-13 inches and tons of 8-9 incher's my little honey hole
