Fishhound just released its top 50 best crappie lakes in the country. Three from Florida made the list. Somehow my beloved Crescent or Lake George/Astor section of the St. Johns did not make the cut. Here are the lakes that did make it though.
21. Harris Chain of Lakes
32. Monroe
46. Lake Talquin

I live in FL and the Harris Chain wouldnt even be in my top 5. My top 5 in no particular order would be Crescent, Talquin, Monroe, Lake George/Astor area, The Big O (even though i have never been). How about yalls top 5?
I believe I would have to agree with you on that one.
Talquin, Monroe, Crescent, Orange/Lochloosa, Lake George and I hear good things about the Kissimmie River. I would put Lake Seminole above the Harris Chain!
Kentucky Lake is way overated and all the Ga lakes being above Talquin? Why do you see so many Ga people at Talquin then?
Yeah this list doesnt have much credability IMO. I think that the results are based off overall history in the crappie fishing community not present lake condition. I hear the Harris Chain used to be excellent but even since I have been down here it hasnt been to hot. I agree with you on the GA lakes being above Talquin as well, Clarks Hill is the only lake that could possibly beat out Talquin. But for Crescent to not be on the list is ridiculous IMO, it has took over 14lbs the past 3 years to win the CrappieUSA tournament. I definately agree about Reelfoot being overrated, alot of big wigs are involved with that lake so I see why its on here. I think the Chamber of Commerce near some of these lakes may have done some lobbying as well, lol. Thats the only way i can explain it...........Where are all the Southern California lakes at? SoCal has some EXCELLENT lakes for HUGE crappie.

No disrespect intended Crappiegirl......I just dont know if its the 21st best lake in the entire country for crappie.
It's probably better for your favorite lake to NOT be on that list. I've only been crappie fishing for two seasons now but based on the reports I've seen on here the list doesn't seem to reflect what we see fishing report wise. That looks like the same list that was published 10 years or so ago that is still online somewhere.

Take Talquin off the list. They just drained the lake and are starting over.
It was released on March 6th, 2013. There are several popular outdoor websites that have links and articles about it. It says lakes were ranked according to data from CrappieMasters, CrappieUSA, CrappieNation, outdor writers, and experts in the crappie fishing industry.

Not boring at all.... :-). And I didn't mean to imply the list wasn't current. We love crescent so I'm happy it isn't on there. It doesn't need the added publicity I don't think.

i dont get leave, we will all becoming home in May........We actually have an offshore charter scheduled for the beginning of April to catch Marlin and dolphin. I hope our Commanding Officer doesnt cancel it. I need to wet a line!
After fishing Talquin,and Crescent and listening to the great fishing at Monroe plus fishing Oconee and West Point in GA, I can not find any credablity in this report whatsoever.....But if it is on the internet, it must be a fact:RoflQuote:

They are both good lakes..Oconee is usually dead in Jan and Feb but March-May is usually a great lake for some big fish...West Point has some good fish also, but I think it is over publicized...It is great for quantity but so-so for quality. I wouldn't give up a trip to Talquin or Crescent for either one tho.Quote:

I would pick Crescent, Monroe, Lochloosa, Kissimmee & Tarpon as my top 5 in Florida.
Big O is well overated to what it once was, same for the Harris Chain both were good
once, due believe some of their problems were fishing pressure without size limit and
continued building around the lakes, as well as chemicals being used to control hydrillia. The later being Blue-gill used to be monsters in Kissimmee, past few years,
size is big, but no meat on gills, very skinny..this could be from dispensing of pellets
by air into lake. Gill comes to surface and eat pellets, Crappie spawn before gills and they inturn eat the gill's fry, Hence now spec's are holding size, but weight is dropping same as gills did and they look sickly. (just my opinion) no one from FWC
wants to talk about situation on the "Kissimmee"
raid gill nests.. The Big O was once commercial fished beyond belief for Spec's....
Reelfoot is another lake that has been over rated probably the past 15 years........
Too many fish camps and to much tourist money spent at Sports Shows to convince
people to come fish at Reelfoot.

In Florida I think the water levels have dropped so much as to lose flow in places like Kiss., Okee., Harris chain, Apopka, Clermont. And that lessens the spawn and feeding area over all these lakes which means less fish produced. Then there is much more fishing pressure on smaller areas. Just like where I live my Dad as a child caught fish from the roadside ditches. They held water year round. Now we may get standing water once or twice a year.

Hey Gun you been speck fishing on Santee Cooper? I used to drive by that lake a lot going up to Fayetteville and always wondered about it. I know it's good for bass and cats. It would make sense.Quote:
