I have only been trout fishing twice when I was young. I'm wanting to take my little cousins and was wondering if anyone on here can give me some advice on th Little Red at Pangburn? Any help would be appreciated, I would like for them to catch a few!!

Used to go there some ,we put in at dripping springs and fished downstream to a little below what I remember to be called the swinging bridge , there's a small island there and a couple deep pools that were productive, two shallow water shoals that can be prop eaters on the way back up in low water conditions, but we always made it back. Also up stream from drippings springs there is a bend to the right with another island or creek i think on the right ,it is also good in that area and after the bend theres a long straight stretch , we fished it as we'll, mostly drifting with power bait , always caught fish mostly stockers ... It's safer to motor up and drift back to your launch ramp , if we drifted down stream past the two shoals and they shut of the water we would sometimes have to move a couple guys to the front of the boat ,lifting the back, like I said we always made it back and it was worth going , but use caution... Hope i helped

Use to fly fish out there all the time. When they turned the generators loose and the water got too swift upstream I'd drop back to Pangburn and had some good afternoons there. Haven't been in a few years (got young kids to look after), but the surefire bait that always used to work is a Powerbait Egg drifted close to the bottom or on the bottom with a small split shot 12- 18 inches above the hook. Use light, clear line (4lb. works good, I wouldn't go above 6lb.). I was out there one day fishing Powerbait with a friend that didn't do much fishing and we were catching dozens of fish. A teenage boy came by and asked how we were catching them and I set him up with the same rig and gave him a jar of Powerbait, but he still wasn't catching anything. Only difference I could tell is that he was using a braid line that was easy to see.
The Powerbait eggs are great because they are tough and stay on the hook very good. They don't seem to catch the brown trout that are very common in the river, but work fantastically well on the stocked rainbows. I used a salmon egg hook so I could cover the entire hook with one egg, but you can use a longer hook and two eggs if needed. I liked the chartruese eggs and would switch to red on the rare days chartruese didn't work so well. Others swear by pink or orange so I'm not sure if the color is usually all that important. Set the hook as soon as you feel a tap or you'll be gut hooking a lot of fish. Make sure you have some hemostats or long needlenose pliers to help get the hook out. I used to keep the one's I hooked deep and release the ones that were lip hooked until I had a limit and then would stop fishing with the eggs so as to not to severely injure fish that needed to be released. They make small circle hooks now that might prevent that, but those weren't commonly available 10 years ago

If ur bank fishing u can fish off the bridge right now at pangburn bc the water is too high too wade.. fyi wading down below the shoal is much better than the bridge... if u r on the bridge put enough weight to stay on bottom and use corn powerbait or wax worms and jus be patient... if u r wading go to the bottom of the shoal and get on one side of the river and cast straight out sideways across the river and have enuff weight so the wax worm bounces off the bottom and swings down river every so often u might have to pop the rod tip to get it unhung.. use 6lb green line or lighter with split shots and a small gold hook size 6 if im not mistaken and use wax worms.. if u have a boat go to drippin springs and float down with trout magnets and a float u want the magnet to b jus off the bottom.. u must have 3lb fluorocarbon line leader for this.. hot pink and chart is best colors surely tht helps and good luck lol

Lots of trout guys are 'purists' or want to wear Eddie Bauer stuff and fish all funny like.
Here's something that will work. I've done it. I don't care for 'em too much, I like my fish to be white inside (I'm prejudiced I guess)......but sometimes they are fun to catch.
Take a simple long shank bream hook, tie it on to no stronger than #6 line onto an ultralight spinning reel. Take a glow-worm......they sell 'em, but I always just bought bright orange plastic worms, bit off a chunk about 2 inches long, and thread it up ABOVE the hook. Between there and the hook, bite on a couple of BB shot, whatever it takes to get this to the bottom. You can buy a can of corn, if you want. I always bought simple fishing worms, like Walmart sells. Fill that hook up with worm, and add a corn kernel at the end if you want.
Drift, and let that drag behind you. When they 'tick' hit it, hammer 'em.
That's it.

Yellow and Black Rooster Tail... The smallest one you can throw...
That's all it takes! If they are biting anything they will hit that.
Fun to catch, ain't fittin to eat!

I've caught more trout than i can caught on Spring river using yellow power bait on a #16 treble hook with a split shot or two about 8-12" above the hook. I use just enough weight to keep it on the bottom, but still bouncing down river. Pay attention to your rod tip. Sometimes it's hard to tell a bite apart from the bait bouncing along. If they are biting well, I will use a yellow 1/8 oz rooster tail, so they are easier to throw back. They swallow the hook a lot with the powerbait and that small treble hook.
