Putting in at Cold Springs Access. Going after walleye. Any body got any advice on catching them? If the walleye don't cooperate I will have to settle for trout. Going to try drifting down river jigging with jigs tipped with minnows. May try a few crankbaits also.
The river looked great sunday,sometimes a few crappie are at the mouth of the creek that comes in up river from the one lane bridge.
You can try night crawlers or pull cranks up river for walleye,I like useing BIG minners.Not sure but think you can only keep one small mouth up there...hummm think its either 16 or 18 inch before you can keep it.
Should be easy to catch your limit of trout there......

I know the trout wont be a problem. Caught plenty of them. Will be my first time in the boat up there. usually wade, and have caught plenty of trout, but only one walleye in around 25 years. For eating I will take walleye over trout. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I will catch a few.Quote:

Trout aren't bad. Just have to take care of them. Clean them while still alive, and skin them. I still prefer crappie, but trout isn't bad fried, or grilled with cajun seasonings. Wish they had less bones though.
Walleye are on my bucket list.

If you catch a sucker(fish) cut up in small peices and tip your jig....

Spring river,south fork,black river,white river,current river even caught a few out of strawberry river.
They have to come up from white river to black river to spring river to eleven point and current river.
If your lucky and fishing in the right spot on the right day Jackson port is the place to be and and and....
Its easier to just chase crappie when they are in lockjaw as to chase marble eyes b/c it takes alittle more work to catch them.A jig and minnow is good but I pull crankbaits in all the above rivers yeah it hurts then I lose a crankbait to a log.You'd be fooled how far you can pull a crankbait in those rivers without any hang ups.....

Water was muddy for spring river, and lots of weeds floating down river. Couldn't hardly make a cast with out catching some of the weeds. Got a lot of bites on the jig tipped with a minnow, but just couldn't hook them.
When they do that try turning your minnow the other way on the hook,if that doesn't work tie a grab hook on a short leader tie it to the jig eye and stick one of the grabs in the minnows tail.At times They worse then bream stealing bait,,,could have been wanting a LARGE minnow or a smaller minnow then what you where useing.Or they were wanting it on a smaller jig...its the reason I said it easier to just chase crappie.

when they bite don't jerk. just start reeling in picking up speed. they will get it. a lot of ti,es if I think i got a bite i am hung. feels like a hang up and it will be a fish. I heard a few years ago shock boat found as many eyes as trout above the dam. Old timers fish just above the dam. Have an 11&3/4 . a week later I ran into a guy that had a 19-4. thought he was huing and started breaking it off when he felt it surge.
2-2 1/2 in Purple and chart umbrella tube on a 1/8 or 3/16 oz head. Point your boat up river.Cast up river let the bait drag doum the current 6-8 lb mr crappie line in camo!!!! good fishing espically around sunkin logs and big rocks with current!!!!
I'm going to try it again later on. Sometime after the water clears up. Need to catch some crappie first.
Thats exactly what my 9lber did. Just grabbed it and wouldnt budge, I thought I was hung. There was just enough give in the line that I decided to reel the snag in instead of breaking off, then he started thrashing!! Man, them suckers are stout!!Quote:

This is the rig I use for back trolling in current or drifting deep holes. That trailer hook is the ticket for those short strikes. Leave a little bit of your night crawler hanging off the end and pinch off the tail.

Thats the rig I was looking for. Couldn't find one around here. I'll have to order done before my next trip. This was a last minute trip. My dad called wednesday night to see if I wanted to go. my dad at 72 years old, I can't pass up to many opportunities to fish with him.Quote:
