Hey all: Been to sardis and nader more than a few times in the last couple years so I know how rough it gets, always borrowed drift socks but looking to get a couple of my own. What size do you prefer and how many for a glass boat-19ft- in say...10-15mph winds when spider riggin in order to stay in the .03-.08mph range? Thanks fellas.
I was told just go big and forget about it. I just bought 2 of the 5X (77") from Cabelas.

Something that is being done as well is to have smaller socks hooked to he front cleats on the boat to help with the bounce. GitDaGrease and Feeshrman were doing that at Washington last weekend and they swear by it.

I have been using 2 infantry parachutes I got from the army surplus. You can not use them in less than 15 of water is the only drawback.
I made the mistake of getting 2, 36 inchers, bad mistake
I have 2 56" for my little 16 foot aluminum boat... need to look into some of the smaller ones for up front, sounds like the way to go
One thing about a 36 inch sock is it's perfect for when pulling cranks and you're TM batteries die. Throw 1 out the back and crank the motor. Puts me right at 1.6 MPH
hmm interesting dd...thats almost like a homemade happy troller! I gots me a 36" and a 50" actually sittin in the garage, but didnt know if another 50" would be good enough or if I should go bigger.
Also good idea about the socks up front--makes sense. I usually put some water in the boat too to help it sit lower.
Kinda dumb question here I feel like, but if I dont have the same size socks out both sides will that cause the boat to continually become sideways? Seemed like even when I borrowed socks and had two of the same size out the boat wanted to continually get angled..
I use those two big socks, and if I do start to angle, hit the TM. It takes the slack out of the sock strap and keeps ya from swinging. As big as the socks are, you don't move much with the TM on medium setting.
You netting fish or catching them? They are dual purpose aren't they? Put em out into the wind and let em pull cranks for ya on windy days huh?Quote:

Socks also help when slow trolling crossways in the wind. I put one out off the back and slow troll. By having a sock out, the drift keeps the boat straight if I'm going say .5 or so

Birdman if your boat tries to get sideways with two socks the same size check and make sure both ropes are the same length and also try turning the steering wheel so the motor faces the oppisite direction of the way the boat is turning to. Sometimes this is all it takes to straighten it out.

mines a 125 HP and pulls at about 3.2 to 3.5 without something to slow it down. I have a long enough cord on mine that I can tie to it where it's in the center of the boat out the back. No problems with it pulling sideways
Arent you afraid you might snag it with a crank pullin a fish in? I thought about 1 inthe center off the bow eye. Sock would be under the boat.Quote:
