Haven't really paid much attention on the crappie. But as you said I think it's a huge factor in the bluegill and redear
Over head, straight up and under foot straight down,,....Bite is on. Not always though, for the weather and pressure is "in there" among so many other factors, but this is a place to start. Full moon,,... catfish will bite better during the day! I'm talkin channels, also crappie too,,... and talking mid Missouri, and I -DO- know that for a fact for me anyway, at least in July and August! I would have to go back and look at a chart to see where the moon was,,... around July 4th, 2012 for the bite was on for me, last year, from 1PM to 6 PM for about a week. fished every day, then, here in Missouri, and caught limits for a week while on vacation at LOZ! You could set your clock by 'em, I swear! I bet the moon was full around then, and that would tell me enough that I could say one way or the other. I may look on internet to find tables of 2012, July, and I'll get back to you. Moon phase, and position, affects it, no doubt about it,,...:twocents as far as I'm concerned anyway! I ain't no fishin pro, just been there allot and done that allot, thank goodness! I 'll bet if you did a search on a thread for it you would find them, I assume you would anyway. Good luck. Dark of the moon for me seems always better night, early morn, & late evening,,... fishing.
:witching
You are correct Bytizawn full moon was July 3 2012 o940:38
Full moon seams to help bring them in in early spring along with a warming trend .At the time of spawn the full moon helps bring to the beds,I like 3days before full moon and 3 days after
I love fishin at night but work interferes so I go every chance I get, weather permitting. I kept track of the phases but this is where a fishin log would come in handy
This year I'm starting a log book on my catches and using my C.C calendar.
Thanks gone_fishing! Fish bit so good, didn't matter at the time! My wife and I burned up 10 dozen minnows a day, and never had one, yes, not even one, left. Might lost a few on casts but we were fishing straight down from the boat! Fished from 1 to 6pm, in the heat of the day. Five hours-+, 120 minnows+-, for five days in a row is, +-600 minnows in about a 25 hour total. Yes,,... then I know said: "The bite is on!!!",,... because it was. It is SO interesting to know the moon was full at the time! When you think about it anything that controls the tides of the sea HAS to have a profound affect on fishing,,...and it does, and especially now because of what a thoughtful member; gone_fishing did and looked up what phase the moon was in almost a year ago I am even more convinced than ever:ThumbsUp! Thanks again!
I have found over the years of hunting and fishing, I'm 65, that paying attention to the moon phases AND the weather will definitely help your success. Many hunting/fishing mags publish these tables on the moon phase, as do multiple I-Phone apps (lots are free for basic service). Gun author, Greg Rodriguez, who writes for seveal major gun mags recently wrote an article about this subject that listed several advanced sources for this topic. I use the tables, plan my trips by them and at times need to donate meat and fish to make room for new stuff.
I plan our tournaments around the full and new moons. For no other reason than to give the fisherman every advantage. However the night tournaments always fall on full moon, or as close as possible. This is for safety.
Not real sure but I do know Saturday during the C.C MS FJ Tourney at Lake Washington the peak time was spot on, 11am to 2pm were peak and that is when we caught 90% of our fish.
I am a believer for hunting and only makes sense it would work for fish as well, anyone have one app in particular that works good for them?
I'm always glad to see full moon coming in February, mar, apr. Don't know why but I always go early and almost always get a limit early during the four days around full moon.
Summary:
Full Moon – Best to fish the evenings/nights or the next evening during this phase. They've been feeding all night.
New Moon – Best to fish at first light. Fish can now see the bait after being blind all night.
* Full Moon: This is where it is best to fish at night, due to the fish can see good just like you don’t really need a flash light because it’s lit up for us humans. Stained water you typically want to fish 5-10ft. The fish can see the bait and will move up to feed. Crappie are sight feeders. Clear water you typically want to fish as deep as 15-20ft. 3 days before and 3 days after the Full Moon phase, you want to focus on evening/night fishing. If you fish the next morning of a Full Moon you may not be as successful, due to they have been feeding all night. They are now full.
* New Moon: This is where it is best to fish first light, due to the fish have been swimming around blind all night because the New Moon phase causes it to be pitch black in the water for the fish. This is where your scents come into play, live minnows giving off vibrations, a light hanging off the side of the boat. 3 days before and 3 days after the New Moon phase, focus on the morning bite!
* Other Moon phases: I wouldn’t be too concerned. The fish will either be scattered looking for fish to eat, or stacked up full. You might get one here and there every now and then.
~ Hope this helps. Feel free to add to this. In case you are wondering where I got this information from; I watched a bunch of PRO Crappie Fisherman explain this.
For me I pay no attention to moon phases and tidal times. If I have the time and wanna go fishing I'm going reguardless. Don't want to start the day with negative thoughts because some chart told me it's gonna be no Bueno today. When it comes to fish and wildlife I think weather trumps all, I've caught fish on good moon days and bad moon days reguardless I feel they are biting somewhere on the lake everyday it's my job to find where.
YOU WILL NOT GET THEM SITTING AT HOME!!!! I have caught them when i was`nt supposed to and didn`t when they where supposed to be at best. go fishing!!!!!
Weather is all I concern myself with. Wind more than any other factor. That said I always look at my fishing adviser app on my phone because just as well start somewhere. As soon as the app seems to be useless I move on to my next guess at where the fish will be feeding. I go fishing when it suits me and if the fish are not biting well I still have a good time. Being retired means you can pick the nicer weather days or as I often do the days the wind is blowing baitfish to the shore.
I've noticed that when I have a line in the water I have better success than when i am home on my computer.
But will say I was on my home lake this year and the Guru's who always catch fish were not doing anything in morning and miday when they usually tear them up. I had just gotten there from driving from STL and was out on a dock didn't do much for couple hours then hour or so before dark the bite turned on bigtime. looked up while later and there was full moon rising. did same thing next day. so there is that. was in march i believe.
We should make a compilation on this topic as a collaborative effort.
I am sure glad I'm not a fish, I don't think I could wait for the moon to do it's thing before I eat!!!!
my wife and I have a joke at our place .....the moon is really big sweety I HAVE to go , there aint no moon sweety I HAVE to go , there is a crescent moon sweety I HAVE to go ......
if you get my drift .....:Rofl
