Need to get rid of these and I can't seem to pattern them even with the camera and corn. Need to build a trap. Hawg dawgers ain't gitten it done. Got pics of them tresspassing a couple hours after the hogs came through and then the hogs were back a few hours after the dogs.

This is the best door for these hogs. I used a picture as a model. I use Cow panels for the floor, ceiling and roof(yes roof). Soak corn and put in pen or better use something called Hog Wild to bait them up. Use steel fence post to reinforce the walls.
I like it. Not the price, but the idea. I have been working on a flip door like that, but haven't put it all together like I want it. That design looks good. I have been using the Hog Wild and it works really good to get them to find the bait pile quickly.Quote:

All this rain is gonna keep me from fishing for a few days. I got a hankern for some BBQ and my farmer buddy wants the pigs GONE. That's the agreement for taking my boys deer hunting on his farm. Pretty sweet deal as long as I hold up my end of the agreement. I don't want him to see anything but dead pigs!

Dan, the fist two traps I set up were small 4X8 with a trigger to drop a door down. They work great but would only catch one or two hogs because when the trigger is hit and the door drop no other hags can get in. The swinging door allows more hogs to come in but keeps the crapped hogs in. I just soak the corn in pure water until it swells and then pour it in a trough. Start by leaving the swing door open until you get the hogs coming into the trap then set it to swing. They will get used to the door location and then will push it open and go in. I used commercial grade cable ties to attach the panels together, they work. Make your trap large, 16X8. We used heavy duty bolt cutters to cut the panels to size.
Swing Door Image that is easy. I used a counter weight on a pulley rather a spring, it makes it easy for the hogs to push open and does not scare them as much. The trap I made that worked were not portable.
The hogs left my area about 4 years ago when the dry weather caused all the creeks and beaver ponds around me to dry up. My traps are all gone now but I may end up building another as this dry weather is OVER.
Good luck and it is some fun #$%^ catching these hogs. Fix up a small trailer with a match up door so you can drive the hogs out of the pen and into the trailer.

Shine, you can get a prmit to use spot lights at night! I would definitely put out traps, but they only gonna catch smaller ones. Gotta to kill the big sows to stop them. The ones under 100 pounds are some of the best sausage you will find. I make mine in jalepeno cheddar! It is best to catch them and feed them out a month, but the smaller ones are good to eat period. Don't let anyone tell you different, we eat them all the time. Just butchered 6 a couple weeks back. I don't make anymore dry deer sausage. Pour a beer or some apple cider over your corn and let it sit 2 or 3 days before putting it out. Do not just put it on the ground, make them work for it bury most of it. This makes them work and keeps them around. These things can have up to 60 young in a year, it takes alot to get rid of them or keep them under control as we do.

I would prefer to shoot them on sight in the fields, but hours spent looking .vs hours a trap stays ready is the reason I am looking at trapping. I can't afford the night vision/thermal options. They are really cool and some great videos on You Tube from Jager and some others. If money was not an issue, I would get on one of those choppers and pretend like the pigs were terrorist!!!!
A question about the traps: Do pigs come back to traps after pigs are killed in the traps? I don't want to remove live pigs to transport anywhere. I want them dead quickly and on ice quickly. Will pigs return to a trap after pigs have been killed in the traps, or do the traps need to be relocated?
Some really cool ideas on the www. for different kinds of traps. Material costs kinda suck. Bullets ain't cheap either, especially after all the recent BS over bullets. Maybe an old musket with a cap and ball is the answer. Get back to the basics!
We trapped hogs for 4 or 5 years on one of our properties in Hancock...Had a couple of welded portable type traps..Most of the time , we'd drop loop ropes into the traps and catch their back legs and tie the rope to the top, lifting the rear end up... Hogs aren't used to that !!!! Pretty soon their front ends would collapse, they'd be worn out... Then we'd drag them out, jump on 'em, and tie the front legs up !!!! WAY TOO MUCH FUN !!!! One guy to knock the pig down and hold the mouth shut , another to tie...My then 10yr. old loved tackling them, and he didn't even play football !!! We'd keep 'em in a holding pen for a couple of weeks, then put 'em on the smoker...But with the really big boars, we'd shoot 'em in the trap....And move the trap to another place, wouldn't catch any more where a big boar had been killed, some we just let go because they'd stink so bad, it would be weeks before another hog would get caught there...

It has been my experience that if you kill the hog in the trap, the others will avoid it. It is better to remove the hog live from the trap and kill it somewhere else. If you would like to build a pen trap large enough to cause a mass extinction, pm me. I believe I have most of the things you would need. I also have a single trap you a welcome to borrow.

You dont need the night vision stuff. Use a regular spot light! DNR will give you a nuisance permit! They come out at night we will park the truck near where they are coming out and take a nap til we hear them. They are loud you will here them. Then just get out and put the light on them. If you bury corn with hole diggers they will dig and make plenty of noise. My neighbors wife makes toys out of pvc for them to roll around to get corn too. One of the lands we hunt the landowner just walks on his front porch and can hear them. He calls and we come to sneak up on them. You gonna have to figure out a way to get the big females to slow them down and the only way we found is too shoot at night! Get those boys to camp out on them.
