save for the 898 hd si combo
get with Brian at BBG Marine or David at Shut up and Fish
898 or bigger detail will be better with a bigger screen.

The 598 and the 798 are the same unit except for...:
*The 798 has 3 preset view buttons...
*2 card slots...(the 598 has 1 card slot)...
*Ethernet compatible (if its the 798ci HD SI Combo)..

Thanks for the opinions guys. I guess I'm just trying to convince myself that the 598/798 size will be good enough. All the research I've done points to getting the bigger screen. But, funds aren't unlimited and I just bought a kicker and a Terrova troller. So, to keep the wife from killing me, it might be 598/798 or nothing.

Alright, so I sold a few unneeded hunting items and talked the wife into a SI finder. Now, my dilemma. Am I better off getting a HD 898 or a non-HD 998. Either one is at the top of my budget, so an HD 998 just too much. So, 7" with LED screen, or go with the 8" without LED?

I'd go with the bigger screen. Been a bunch of those units sold and used over the years and never seen a big hue and cry over the backlite.
I have a non HD 998 and a 798 HD, I really like the led backlit screen. If I was buying new I would get the 898 HD and remove the readouts on the full SI screen.

I have a new HD 898 and a 597 and there is a big diff. in brightness of the screens. When you turn SI readouts off you basically have a 998. I bought mine from brian at bbg and he is great to deal with. Hope this helps...Clear as mud right....haha
