I wouldn't skimp out when it comes to yo-yos. The cheap ones miss a lot of fish be cause there trigger mechanisms are setup different. Personally, to me, the only way to go is the White's yo yos. If your any where near toad suck park, that she'll station that sells bait, has the Whites for 26.99 a box. That's the cheapest I've seen the anywhere. The common price is 32 bux a box.
Gotcha on that.. I bought some White's at Wal-mart. I was really talking about the contraption that holds them out of the water. Thanks for the input though. The blackswans use White's as well.
I have used something similar to that before they will catch fish, but the problem you will have is if the wind starts to blow you will have to search the entire lake to find them. Also people love to "borrow" 1 to have a pattern of their own. If I was to buy yo-yo's I would buy Whites and Whites only and tie them to cypress limbs.
Also check pawn shops for yo-yo's that is where the majority of mine came from. People are always pawning the darndest things.
Black Swans cost toooo much. Make your own or use a tree limb, they are free
The bad thing I don't like about yo-yos is if a small fish bites, it's high and dry by the time you get to it. Large fish are at the surface and can become turtle food. I've had both.
Go to www.limbline.com - www.limbline.com\home\portarthur\limbline they are made in AR. I got a few this weekend to try this year.
Im not sure how much the Swans cost, but it would probably be cheaper to make your own, if you have the time.

You can eliminate this by replacing the short tie-line with a longer one. Hang the yo-yos to where the hook barely touches the water when fully retracted. This keeps from pulling the smaller fish out of the water and they can move around enough to keep from becoming turtle food. Just make sure it is high enough to keep a little tension on the hook.

And yard sales. I bought 5 doz from a lady this past weekend for $4 per box that had never been opened before and were in 100% new perfect condition. She was cleaning out a shed that her recently passed husband stored stuff in. They were so old, they didn't have the bar scan code thing on the box.
LA you are make money:biggrin
I actually gave a guy on here a good deal that had been looking for a few and hung on to 2 boxes. First new yo's I've had in probably 15 yrs!
Clamps make them stiff, only 1 per tee is needed. A few for a dollar is cheap enough!
A friend of mine makes them from Garden hose and a coat hanger. Everybody has old garden hose laying around!!!! I know you have coat hangers!!!!
I have seen them made out of pvc pipe also. need 5 90 and 2 "t" and the pipe. make a square at the bottom put a t on both sides in the middle come up with pipe on bothsides and put a 90 were they meet and you can hang the yoyo right there.
So what is the legal number of these you can put out? I'm guessing 30 since its has to do with yo yos
Thanks for all the input. I've decided to make my own. I can make them for about $60/dozen at the most.
since they are free floating yo yo rules dont apply but must follow rules for free floating devices
- Up to 20 free-floating fishing devices not attached to a stationary object or boat may be used per person.
- All free-floating fishing devices must be clearly marked with the user's name and address, driver's license number or current vehicle tag number.
- Free-floating fishing devices may be unattended only from sunset to sunrise.
I have some like the Blackswans. Made them myself from black water pipe and a T. They work good in locations where you don't have a lot of overhanging limbs to tie to. I used to fish oxbows and would set them over a stickups in water deep enough to fish. Fish will tangle line sometimes. I have also used them like jugs. Slight breeze and anchor. Put them out and let them drift. I also took 1/2in water pipe insulation and put around bottom ring for extra flotation.
I used 3/4 and just put the insulation on the outside and wrapped electrical tape a couple of turns every 6 inches. When I put the T in I did not glue. Left it loose, used a heat gun on stand up piece to shape a bend in it. You want it where your line will be centered in the hole. Drilled a hole in bottom of pipe at end to tie Yo-YO to. You can also tie on a large snap swivel that way you can take off YO YO to store. You also will have to play with line length depending on how deep you want to fish so you have enough tension to set hook when fishing shallow. You can unreel some line and cut it off which will wind the spring tighter.
I use the square ones made of PVC. Biggest fish, 22 lb catfish. He pulled all the string out and pulled the whole thing under water. Not deep. But the wind will blow them around, that's for sure.
If you go with the black pipe, I would make sure you plug the top end. And put reflective tape on the up right.
Please post a photo of one of them!I have never seen one?I have fished with jugs, limb lines, etc never yo yo's.
This is what mine look like. Ain't cheap to build.

(Hope that works)
The clamp makes some resistance, can fold down for storage.

Shoot some spray foam in each end while assembling.
I only use the clamp to make some resistance, it makes it stiff so it won't swing down when a hog hits it! But you can fold them down for storage.
The pipe fits tight enough to prevent water from getting in, the foam is for piece of mind.
OK, tell a TOTALLY "construction challenged" old man...............what is that pipe? How do you get round pipe? Must be flexible. ??? How much per foot, where?
This intrigues me.
PM me if needed............
How long are your pieces?
Oooooo, is my brain is a' reelin'...........
Is the floating foam stuff just "Great Stuff"......that you spray in the pipe? What is best?
