I would also like to know more about walleye fishing. Never actively gone after them but think I may try at hillsdale this year. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Try ~mid March/ St Patricks Day. I have 4-31March marked on my calender.
Evenings at dam.
Follow water temps on the Ks Parks website for Clinton.
Today the water temp at Clinton started at 39 deg at day light and was 41 when I left around 1:45 PM with eleven crappie in the box.
Whats the best thing to throw or will they hit anything when spawning...was thinking a RL2 crankbait or 3 inch YUM blood red walley grub
I will give my two cents worth. Im no walleye guy. But, they never seem to cooperate during the spawn. Post spawn usually seems a whole lot better and then look for them on the flats they seem a lot more interested in eating.
First full moon in Feb is when the big fish spawn, most guys fish way to late! And that's a fact JACK!!! :)
Well it looks like a person better be on the rocks the night of the 25th. DK
Seems like i have had best luck in central and north part of state after the 15th of march through the end of first week in april. What is you guys favorite lures to throw while wade fishing? I like xraps personally but was wanting try different baits.
So I went out on my priveate lake 300 acres (Sherwood Lake) and hit the damn and a rocky boat ramp. sunday..hoping for walley....threw a RC2 crank for about 1 hr and got some really nice prespawn bass and a crappie. got 4 total and two hits in two spots shallow. all 3-4 lbs... pretty good for that lake. No walley.
Question, if you are catching and removing spawning fish, are you hurting the fish. Just a question not a judgement
Thats a good question and it comes up every year on forums when it comes to spawns of every species especially walleye. The answer to me lies on what each individual believes since it is not illegal in Kansas like other states were it is illegal to take walleye during the spawn. Those states that have made it illegal have much better natural recruitment from the spawn of there walleye than Kansas does. If you were to fish for them during the spawn and not want to effect the possible future fish in your lake you could release the females. Here is a link of how many fry alone that KDWP stocked in our reservoirs last year they stock intermediates and fingerlings as well. As you can see numbers are in the millions for many of these lakes. Also spawning walleye aren't the easiest to catch since they aren't interested in eating to much it is kind of a challenge.

Stockton?
I've fished for these toothy critters for twentyfive plus years, but I'm no expert on the matter of the spawn or anything else for that matter. Just my :twocents. The spawn is tough fishin. Have fished in the snow, during a drizzle with ice in the guides-not fun and on mild evenings/nites-more pleasureable. All of my fishing has been done 1-2 hrs from Salina. I've never had a consistant bite during the spawn. As was stated, they are there for one reason and it's not eatin. As for the % of fish caught, most all were males. The very few females caught were released. My lures of choice are # 9 Rapalas or Storm Thunder sticks that size. You want that bigger profile in the water. Colors are chrome and black or blues, flor orange or perch patterns. A couple or three fish caught during the nite is pretty good for me but there has been alot of single-zip nites too. I prefer nites during the full moon phase or no moon at all. On the full moon phase I want a cloudy nite with at least a breeze blowing into the bank or dam that I'm fishing. Bright nites and calm water, verrrry slow fishin in my experiences. Usually I'll start fishin about the middle of this month thru Easter weekend for the spawn. However I've found that the males will hang around for a week or two after the spawn is over and they will be hungry! Again, I'm no expert on this or anything else for that matter, just my own stupidity when it comes to fishin.
Thanks for sharing the info! Always good to hear opinions of those who have been at it awhile!
The above I like.....I learned something :ThumbsUp Thanks for posting it
Good to know info!
Just some observations I've noticed, artificial light in the dark can limit your catch. I've found just enough to see while tying is probably best. Also, try to limit shining your light into the water as much as possible and while walking the bank. No, it won't kill your evenings fishing, but it sure impedes it.
As with many of you, that twilight and just after sundown are generally pretty good times. I've also found the witching hour to be awesome, especially when you pretty much "own the place". Anymore I even take my waders in the boat, that's just trial and error each of you will have do. Hope you sack-a-bunch :ThumbsUp
Today is the anniversary of my catching my personal best walleye. 7.5 lbs trolling a dark green jointed rapala on Cheney dam right at dusk. My Father in law was my fishing partner that day. It also turned out to be his last trip. His health had been deteriorating for quite some time and it got to where it was just to risky to take him anywhere medical assistance couldn't be readily available. He passed Jan 2 this year after a massive stroke. He is truly mssed.
Sorry to hear that JD. At least you will always have that memory of him being with you when you caught that monster!
Definately A great memory, He was like a little kid that night. Hopefully we can get some water levels up before the spawn really hits so that i can launch at cheney. I really dont think i can right now. I have never hit the spawn at Marion Res. But will have to try it this year as soon as i get some reports. This next moon cycle should be the ticket if the temps get up a little.
41 degree water temp...it's time!!:biggrin
Woo hoo!! If you go, let us know how you did!
Talked to a buddy last evening and the info I got, the dam face at Marion is just getting started with an occasional fish being caught.
Headed To Marion fri am. Unfortunately my partner can't leave til 6am. 1 hr drive in the water later than i want but it is a shakedown cruise also. 1st trip since Black Friday. Been looking forward to it. Seems like lately when i can go the wind is blowin 90 to nuthin. I'll let ya know what i find.
