This is what we've been waiting for! I don't think we will ever be rid of the devils, but perhaps this will keep them under control. A couple of additional plants in the area would be a plus.
They are talking about processing around 10,000 pounds a day when they get up and running full tilt! That's about 3.5 Million pounds a yr! A few yrs of that & it'll make a big dent!Quote:

Paul Rister I believe said that the rules for asian carp are getting more lenient for the commercial guys. That should help.
All that netting strung up during spawn is putting the crappie in harms way. They already extended net fishimg 1 month and that is getting real close to some problems with fish migration. Have you guys ever seen the commercial fisherman string nets in the back of the bays and run their boats back and forth hearding the fish towards their nets. I have and you ought to see all the fish trying to jump over those nets.I see some big crappie coming out of those nets and they do not survive! I know they need to do something but I am also concerned about how they go about doing things. I told Paul a few years back just joking if I was China I would plant some Asian Carp in the US so we would grow their food for them. Interesting sometimes!
I have several friends that are commercial fishermen. They are gearing up for this opportunity. One of my buddies says he can do 2000# a week easy! Just doesn't have a market for'um yet.
Great news Whiskers! It's my understanding commercial fishermen can harvest certain size fish by using a net with bigger or smaller holes. This is supposed to allow many of the sportfish to slip through with a small percentage dying in the nets.
I've seen big schools of these things in the back of some of the bays in Barkley this time of year. It's interesting, if one gets spooked the entire school which may be 150 yards long, will react in a fraction of a second.
If this Asian Carp Processing Plant goes well, hopefully it will lead to many more up and down our river systems. It's about the only chance we have.
Commercial guys have a chance to make good money but they will earn it. I spoke with one a couple of years back who told me an Asian Carp is one of the stinkiest things he ever had in the boat. Now that's saying something.
More and more people are getting hit in the head with these things. Seems like most of them were either just starting their motor or moving 8-12 miles an hour. Haven't heard of a bass boat speeding down the lake getting hit yet. If it does, somebody could be hurt seriously.

I understand the problems with nets and catching fish other than the target species. With that said, here is a pic from the other day of a batch of big heads. Something has to be done to get them out. This is not me!!

Once they figure it out down there. They need to just keep moving (the processing plants) up the river. I wish them much success.
Is Kentucky Wildlife pushing the processing plant or is the federal government. For everyone's sake I hope it it is Kentucky wildlife. I am thinking Illinois ships their Asian Carp to China. If the feds are involved, getting rid of the carp will not be their goal. Politicians who own the plants and sell the fish will be the goal, which will mean the fisherman will have to pay a fee to catch, etc. proly will be illegal for a fisherman who gets one jumping in his boat illegal to kill or keep, etc. Feds will want the population of them to increase for profits. IMHO

They hate a mud motor. We had them things going nuts on a side chute of the ohio this fall. Dangerous if you have a smaller person in the boat and they get hit with one.

Just out of curiosity what is the farthest "up" you guys have ran into them?
I found some of the jumping silvers in Mud river so they are in Green above L&D 3. With the shape that L&D 4 is I suppose it is only a matter of time before they are in Barren if they are not already.
Hopefully she has a solid business plan. I am a bit skeptical about getting uninterrupted flow of fish unless they do come from commercial fisherman. Not too many fisherman are going to drive an hour after fishing all day to bring them a fish or two that they caught. And in the winter the supply may all but dry up if the winter is harsh. Most businesses need to operate all year to make a profit.
With that being said I sure wish her the best and hope it does work.
