I am completely new to crappie fishing and am very eager to get into it. I live in Conway, AR. Can I get some tips on places near me to fish as well as a good "starter list" of things I need?

You will need the folowing :
boat, jig pole, jigs, net, cooler/live well, fillet knife, fish cooker, oil, corn meal, fries, hushpuppies, friends to help you eat them.
I think that should cover the basics of what you will need, but the friends will take care of its self when you start frying fish, they will show up from everywhere. Oh, and most importantly ALOT of time, because once you figure it out, you won't want to stop.
Jokes aside, welcome aboard!

Welcome from NLR. If there anything I do let me know.
Welcome from Pine Bluff. You should be able to get any jigs you might need from several of the people on this sight. Come to crappie camp and you can find out most anything you wanted to know from these guys.
LM covered pretty much everything you need. If you are in Conway you have a lot of good fishing right around you.
1 Conway
2 Dardenelle
3 Overcup
4 Brewer
5 Atkins
6 Harris Brake
All these are pretty close to you and all hold good fish. There are several very good fisherman on here in that area and you should be able to get help. Just PM them and they are very willing to help.
Welcome from another Conway guy. Try making it to crappie camp in April on Dardanelle. Many great crappie fishermen, and women, will be there and I think you can learn a lot from just talking to them and listening. See the sticky at the top of the Arkansas forum page for sign up lists. Good to have you aboard!
Welcome from Jonesboro AR.
I wish my first intro was I live in Conway is there any place to fish near me.:Rofl
Welcome. I'm a newbie too, so when you figure it all out, you can let me know. :)
I've just been reading a lot on these forums while getting set up for some trial and error myself. I ordered a starter set of tackle from Midsouth Tackle and they look like they might catch some fish if I put the jigs in the right place. Lots of folks here have lots of items and ideas to recommend. Afraid I don't have any input just yet, but I'm hoping to change that by spring. :)
So any suggestions for jig kits or poles?

1/16 oz and 1/32 oz jigs, I use alot of black/chart, pink/chart, white/chart... actually anything with chartruse in it will catch fish wherer I go. I usually use yellow heads, or plain grey lead color.
I use a 12' Uncle Bucks jiggin' pole, I use them for spider rigging or single pole fishing. Go to the Spring camp at Lake Dardenelle (there's a thread at the top of the page). These guys will learn you till they can't learn you anymore.
And the best thing is to get out there and get a jig wet, the best info comes from time on water.

Welcome to the Arkansas Crappie.com message board. We hope you enjoy your time here. Unfortunately I am not from your area, but I can help you with your equipment. To get started right and save rebuying later in the future, I would recommend the following equipment:
Go with a glass boat. It rides so much better than aluminum
Dual bucket seats on the bow makes for comfort and the ability to take a friend.
A Cordless/wireless troller is almost a necessity if you plan on doing any trolling. I have mine located on the left hand side as you can see.
I use a custom bamboo crappie rod for sensitivity and backbone.
My bow depth finder is located on the right hand side, but it is a convenience to have one at the console as well
Here is my rig described in the above features. Hope you can find one as nice without breaking the bank.
Welcome to the site. Im pretty new myself but there's alot of good information here.
RCC I like you crappie catching kit:biggrin
Hahaha! I have seen that same setup out catch $20,000 rigs.

Welcome from Lake Nimrod.
On your tackle question. It's hard to beat B-n-M or Ozark jig poles. You interested in jigging or trolling (spiderrigging)? Southern Pro Umbrella tubes and MEATGETTER hand tied jigs are my two favorites. Send MEATGETTER a PM and he can help with tackle needs.

Welcome from whitehall
Welcome from the north shores of lake Conway. I'm no expert, and I don't have a fancy boat, but the one I got seems to catch fish fairly well. Send me a PM if you want me to show you around a bit.
Welcome from the shores of Lake Conway...I could write all day about Lake Conway...but If you dont mind search my post there are 100's of articles with pics and tactic's to get you started on Conway and other spots around central AR...hope to meet youy on the water one day..
As far as poles I will only buy Ozark Rods now. You actually have a dealer right down the road from you. PM "Conway" and he can set you up with a pole. The brand of jigs I use is primarily mid south, last weekend was the first time I fished with lake fork minnows and I really like them as well. Jig head I mainly use midsouth and crappie magnet, but I'm not real big on crappie magnet plastic just my opinion though.
Welcome from Beebe. Listen to these fellas they wont steer you to bad

It's a no brainer to me...
You live in Conway, Fish Conway.
As a child I hated coming to lake Conway with my grandpa... We had other places that seemed better at the time.
Several years ago we moved to Mayflower and I decided since I live here I can't afford to fish anywhere else..
I wouldn't trade this ole' mudhole for any other lake around!
We have some BIG OLE' crappies and plenty of em'
