Until they change the current laws, mental illness cannot be added to background checks. There are laws protecting patients from having their medical records released. They call the law Hippa.
I thought it was the FBI also. The guberment doesn't have the time to check them.
I thought the guys at bass pro in Memphis told me it went through the state. No records are kept after approval. System info is purged after 24 hrs. That's one of the complaints from Gov. They want permanent registration files so they know who,what,when and where.
Guess I'll ask next time in LGS.
I would call the high way patrol since they issuse permits.

In Oklahoma the background check is done buy the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI). The wait time last year was about three months. Costs was $100; Sheriffs office also does a local check of county courts and DAs office. There is a question on application about mental health. This is for a concealed carry permit. We are now an open carry state but you must still have permit to open carry, if you open carry the police can ask to see your permit at any time. To buy a gun from a dealer you must register it and there is no waiting period. Most states have the laws on their web sites just remember its .GOV not .COM
We use to be an open carry state.
Now you have to get training before getting your CCW, along with an IC patch. The state instructor can charge what he wants. I've seen $75. to $300. for the same course.
We are still an open carry state. There is a bill in the legislature now that makes it clear. You do not have to have any training to get a concealed carry permit but you do to get the "enhanced" concealed permit. You are correct that the instructor can charge whatever they want and teach whatever they want also but they generally follow the NRA course.

Same here canebreaker must have training certificate 8 hour class teaches mostly gun safety because a lot of people are handling guns for the first time also teaches places you can carry and you shoot 50 rounds. Some other things on OSBI check you must send finger prints and passport photos with application and one question asks if you have ever been committed for mental health problems. I think most of the southern states will honor other states permits while traveling.
The reason is to prevent people with mental health problems or felony convictions from walking around armed even if most felons do anyway. But former felons who are stopped for a broken taillight or something with guns get to go spend more time with their convict buddies. I carry concealed because I don't want the bad guys to know I am armed.Quote:
