Never heard of a hot water heater...why would you need to heat hot water?:dono
never heard of one, I don't think.....whats its purpose?
Look into one of these...gewber!
Tankless water heaters - instant hot water on demand
No need to heat hot water. It's actually a cold water heater!!! Tankless water heaters are OK, I've installed several lately. They are fairly limited on size depending on how many points they will service. If it were me, I would go with a natural gas or propane model as the electric units use A BUNCH of amperage.
The tankless are awesome products from what I understand. Cost is high on front end but will make up the savings on utility bill within 3-4 years. When one of tanks goes out, I am replacing all 3 with tankless.
Seem to me the expansion tank would be used to maintain or normalize the pressure in a closed system? I'm not a plumber, but I did sleep 8 hours last night...:Rofl
we have one and wish we had never seen one . we have had to have it worked on about 4 times in seven yrs . the water system has a lot of issues with dirty water (not fault of tank). we were told to cover the vent leaving 18 inches above exit . they then said the rusting of internal parts was due to improper venting and to remove the hood . we recently added a drain to take care of rain/condensation . the cost of repairs has offset any/all savings as far as i can tell . we have a regular tank in the other part of the house . no problems . ours is gas and repairs are high .
I have experienced pros and cons on the tankless heaters, the people that complain usually went with a cheaper newer version. Most of the people I know that kicked the buck and got the Renai have been very happy with them. Think I spelled that rite but anyway they are expensive but they are good. And I agree about the electric ones, heard of alot of people having trouble out of them.
Bwahahahahaha you rite!!!!!
Friend of mine put in 2 Large Reni heaters about 7 years ago and still singing the praises of them. Guy my wife works with bought a cheaper model gas about 3 years ago and it's never worked right. He finally took it out and got a regular gas one.
I guess we pretty much Hijacked WB's thread and not answered his question. Never heard of a expansion tank for hot water heater.
Got 2 75gal NG units and you can't run them out of hot water.
A whole house water filter is needed. The cheap one will hit you about 3500.
Dang jackers. Got a 40 gallon gas fired tank about 3 years old. Bout a month ago the boys bumped the pop off valve and it started dripping at the top of its heating cycle. So, I replaced it. Same thing at lower temps. Thought it was defective, so I replaced again. Same story. Only way I can get it to completely stop is to set temp below "a" temp, which is way to low...like 105 to 110 degrees. In doing a little research, the tank I'm talking about goes on the cold water side and accounts for thermal expansion on a closed system. Apparently, they are common up north, but almost unheard of down here.
Pack yo crap GDG, grab a Rennai thingamabob and come on.

The renai is what we have .
Replace the valve. They get corrosion and lime buildup on them then when lifted off the seat it won't seat back properly.
G and Cray, I done did replaced it, twice now. G, this one has been on for two weeks now and still will drip if I turn the heat up even close to where it should be. If I were to set it as hot as normal, it'd leak a good gallon per day. Maybe more.
Where's Feesh when ya need him anyhow? Don't he sell this kind of junk for minner money?

When was the last time you drained the water heater? They should be drained no less than every 6 months. You can go a year with a whole house filter.
Well WB if it was mine I'd get me a wrench and adjust that releif valve but you don't need to be messin with that. Put IS on here and we'll get this done right.
Sounds to me like you recently changed the pressure regulator and got too high water pressure.
Gewber.
I've drained it twice in the last month. Pressure is right in spec according to the plumber that installed the pressure regulator. Don't remember the values but its set right on it. Also, the house doesn't seem to have any more pressure than before the regulator was replaced.

Call the plumber.
what Feelay said....the tankless are awesome and will save you money in the long run.
Do u have a Back Flow valve? If so, u need this
Attachment 115029
If not, likely causes are pressure over recommended 50-70, heater temp too high, trash in the tank where some keeps getting caught
In the valve seal or a faulty valve.
Sorry bout the thread jackin WB, I have never had experience with an expansion tank. I do remember alot of people had them in Illinois where my wife is from.
Sent from my dang phone
I am going to take a wild guess here and say that that tank is to compensate for the expansion of the really cold water they would have in the winter time up north. Assume it has a bladder in it allowing the excess water from expansion to keep from lifting safety or blowing up heater tank.
Y'all all about worfless. The plumber is scratching his head. Says he's never had this problem before. Screw it. Rinai here I come.

WB when I built my house in 1994 Cleveland went with one way check valves on the water line. Well when the hot water expanded it made the pop off valve engage. Put one of those tanks on and no more problems
