Is trolling or pushing crankbaits allowed in the tournaments? Bandits or Rebel style crankbaits. Thanks for the info
Yes they are, as long as you stay within the rules. No more than 3 poles per person or 6 per boat with more then one person, and no more than 2 baits per pole
wannabecrappieking: thanks for info. just was not sure. did not see anything in rules. hope to throw my hat into the tournament ring this year and have a little fun. can't wait for the cataract tourny Home Lake. let the bragging begin. Thanks again, bigarm
why would u wanna troll cranks anyway? never mind troll all the crank baits you want.... Less competition...... Just kidding. whatever works for you.

Still learning new techniques after a couple events last year.....with the idea of spider rigging this year, I have to ask if the events allow more than six rods in the boat per team? I know each person can only fish three lines but can other rods be on the boat for other types of fishing styles for quick switch over.

Yes your allowed any number of poles in the boat you want. However your only allowed to fish with three per person at a time. State Law!

Thanks for the clarification....it wasn't state law that confused me rather the written language on the rules and regs page of the club. The wording that actually seems most confusing is..." There is also a maximum rod limit of 6 poles per boat (even with 2 members and 1 youth fishing together)." Maybe it is just me! If not it might be worth a minor revision. Anyways, it is good to know. Thanks again.
Here's what the ISM rule book says:
B.) All Participants must use rod/pole & reel combos or hand held poles. A maximum of 3 rod/pole & reel combos or hand held poles are allowed for each person and a maximum of 2 hooks per rod/pole. This temporary rule expires on January 1, 2013: One rig or lure array for use with multiple artificial baits with not more than TWO hooks. There is also a maximum rod limit of 6 poles per boat (even with 2 members and 1 youth fishing together). The use of rod holders is allowed. Artificial and/or live bait may be used. All crappie must be hooked in the mouth or lips. A landing net may be used and no other types of nets for catching fish are allowed.
Here's what the current state law says:
Hooks for Hand or Pole Fishing
You may fish with no more than three poles or hand lines at any one time. Each line may have no more than two single or multi-barbed hooks, two artificial baits or two harnesses for live bait.
I have been corrected, this rule has expired, so I'm not exactly sure what the rule is. I do know that the main reason the original rule was amended was due to the state allowing the Alabama rig. I can't find any info regarding the Alabama(Umbrella) rig anywhere on the DNR website. The state was allowing the interpretation that an umbrella rig was only one bait, and since you could have two baits per line......then you could have two umbrella rigs per line.
I have spoken with a conservation officer from District 6. The new law concerning the umbrella rig will only allow the use of two hooks per rig. Which clarifies that the umbrella rig is not one bait, but an extension of the line to which you attach a bait.
im confussed and not trying to start a whizzing contest
a club rule i could understand and it should be more clear on cranks like they do the rule on a-rig
"You may fish with no more than three poles or hand lines at any one time. Each line may have no more than two single or multi-barbed hooks, two artificial baits or two harnesses for live bait."
if (2 artificial baits) can be used on each line and if the artificial bait comes with 2 or more hooks its legal imo
there are a ton of bass and muskie fisherman that use a artificial bait that come with 3 hooks me included are they legal ?? ive been checked by CO while fishing with atrificial baits with 3 hook and not one word was said about it
We are going to have a meeting in the near future and we will discuss these rules. The DNR rules are a little different then the clubs rules.
Please don't confuse our rules with the DNR rules.
We had to make an adjustment to our rules last year because of the Alabama rig and once again we need to clear the air on it.
No dought a crank bait will catch a crappie. Ive cought plenty on em but there much slower then my good stuff. they work just dont get the numbers.
i have filled my limit trolling cranks for crappie in less than two hours on cataract many times and they are usually good size
Hey Tom,
you may want to re-word that 6 pole per boat rule...that one had us sweating bullets! The way it reads that you are only alowed to have 6 poles in the boat:yikes, glad to hear thats not the case.
we'll cya in a month or so
Hey Troy,
A crankbait, in your case, is considered a one bait or hook by definition.
You could use two crankbaits on one fishing pole and be safe. You cannot use three crankbaits on one fishing pole (not sure how you would do that anyway).

Can someone PM me and tell me the in's and out's of pushing crankbaits?
Thanks
:hesaid its a long read but worth it and a guy on ms board makes and sell wieghts for pushing cranks
That's ScottV, read the thread, it will do a couple of things. First it will give a BUNCH of insite on the art of pulling cranks, most days it is not an art but there are certainly days it is. Second thing it will do is give a pretty good idea of how to read the MS boards, lot of playing around on the board but when you need help they are rite there for the most part. 3 years ago I was as lost as I could be when it came to anything other than single-poling during the spawn, now I feel confident I can go to the lake and have a good chance of catching a mess of crappie 12 months out of the year. Crappie.com is responsible for that, at first on just the MS boards and now across the whole site. KISS, keep it simple stupid has always worked for me and the way I need it, the cranking thread will do just that. Good luck and don't be skeered to ask questions.
