An interesting article about GLSM. Last few times I've been up, no way my fat butt is getting out on the ice for at least another couple weeks but there are some more devoted I guess. Crappie, Walleye, Saugeye, and gills!
wonder if it will last with 60 degree weather today. Glad to see the old lake coming back alive.

We've caught 3 in the 4 years we've had a place on the lake. So I personally know they exist. In fact last year after the ice melted and water started to draw down there was a walleye carcass on our seawall.
But pretty cool, none the less. Please don't take it as an invite to start fishing the green monster but all really are welcome:biggrinAttachment 114432
It is amazing how fish survive in some of the worst years of that lake. You may have lots of company this year now that the lake is making a come back.

But with the lake blowing up no one thought they'd survive since both species are colder water types. With a 6' average depth that lake heats up quickly in the summer but don't have to worry about thermoclines and oxygenation depths.
I've heard minnows are the best at this point. Our channel was open in several spots but my Pop didn't have any luck this past Wednesday.
Saw quite a few big dead ones floating around last year, some of which went over 5 pounds easy.

Actually, the lake's getting better. Since I've gotten to know the lake, catching 30 nice crappie in an outing is very doable. Those black crappie on the lake are THICK, and more round than some other lakes. I think an 11" fish there will weigh more than an 11 out of East Fork, and a 12 is really something.
Carefully note that many of those walleyes/ saugeyes were caught in or on the edges of the DREDGED areas. Apparently there were several choked up SPRINGS that the dredging cleared the built up muck off of. 56F degree water, heavily oxygenated, and flowing in 24/ 7/ 365. The 1 drawback is the areas CAN have thinner ice. Finding them and GPSing them would be a GOLD MINE come spring and summer...(adding cover might make them 3-4X as GOOD...)
Have to admit for as many as we catch, we don't keep to eat. Not a crappie eating/cleaning fan. Will be more than willing to provide for others but just not a fan of eating them personally. Not sure there is a fish I'd rather catch than a slab but if I'm going to clean anything it would be a walleye and I wouldn't hesitate to keep and clean an 'eye from GLSM. Just know the 'Ville has a better success rate for them and GLSM. Plus the smallies are fun. LM's at GLSM can be cool since we're always targeting crappies. A 2 lb LM on light tackle......oh yeah, but I'm not telling you guys anything you don't already know:biggrin!
The eastern part of our channel was supposed have been dredged but I still don't think it will be any more than 3-4 feet deep during the summer. Actually beached our boat there 2 summers ago, 100 feet out from shore and had to get out and push it back out. My cousin swears its the best for channel cats though. He usually hits it from a state park area with cut bait casting to the west. North side isn't a good, but only going off his input. Not too many cats when you're crappie fishing at least for me.
