Meeting at Holiday Lodge

Bennie said they are holding a meeting at Holiday Lodge concerning the 10" rule on Sardis. The public is invited. I got this second hand so I'm not sure of the date or time, but you can call Holiday Lodge and ask at 662-526-5392. I was told it concerned the dates and details about when this law comes into effect.

The regulation is already on the books. No time or date set yet. An hour drive for me, sit and listen to whinning for an hour, an hour drive back home.

I don't think you'll hear much whining there. Most all of the business people are FOR the change. Benny said the 12" size almost put him out of business due to lack of interest from people not catching enough keepers in the summer when you would throw back 100 to keep 5-10. People just quit coming. At least that was my take, from what I heard, on the business owners opinions.

I understand what you are saying about the effect on business Bill, just wondering why the same effect hasn't forced a change at Butla or Enid? Why no changes there?

Might have something to do with Sardis having more pressure or it could be just to try it out and see how it works before doing the other three.....dunno......would be a good question to as for those going to the meetings and hearings on this.

I hope that the new regs help the local business people. But I have a nagging feeling the it's the economy(price of gas and lodging) that's responsible for the drop in visitors.

Not as many business' there I guess. I think they were referring to the county's revenues as well tho.

Boat sales were through the roof for the entire industry last year, but you could be right as far as the longer term effects from the economy. I wish the business' well. We'll have to wait and see how it pans out for the fishery as well as the business owners now tho.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the best thing that ever happened to Sardis was the 12 inch rule? Back in the day I remember it being a dink hole! Last yr was tough but but every lake has its years. Butla will be tough the next couple. If there is not going to be any bickering then why are these folks meeting? They just meeting to high five each other? And think revenue is about to blow through the roof.... Instant gratification is what all fish and wildlife regs are going to. It's all about revenue nowadays.

I spend a lot of time at Sardis and have never heard a business owner blame poor sales on the MLL. But they're constantly blaming it on low water.

Those catches that atm and feelay and his followers caught were limits of good fish it looked like to me . Why now drop it to 10" ? Just wondering ps i do know that these guys are the best , but it still was done .

I'm going to the meeting at Enid tomorrow night at the Enid fish hatchery and will report back their reasoning behind the change.

It should help me fill the washing machine faster. :)

It's a moot point...ATTENTION: ALL THE SHORT FISH ARE GROWN UP!!!! I too had days last year that we caught 200 fish to keep 15 or 20. The reverse is opposite now. Catch 20 now and you may have 2 shorts just under 12". I'm all for dropping the creel to 15 but only if they do it on all the reservoirs. As usual, the gov't gewbers try to fix something that ain't broke. Day late and dollar short.

It seems to me that this happens every year. Not hard to catch 12+ inch fish in Jan, Feb and March. They get pretty well picked over. By the time May, June and July get here, we are back to the 200 fish days.

I was catching lots of shorts last winter also...not so much now.

The biologist told me they are doing this contrary to his recomendation.

It seems like they get hammered all spring and summer. That's when the keeper ratio goes down. Pressure drops off in fall and winter because of hunting season and cold weather. Fall and winter are when those short fish have time to catch up. That's why we start seeing better fish in January. There is no perfect answer to constantly having big fish all of the time unless they put a season on crappie fishing. Give them a three month break every so often and they can catch up.

I was going through almost a pound of minnows and catching 200 fish to come home with 20 fish in January and February of 2012. Give this a year and we'll be catching a bunch of 9 3/4" fish.:banghead
