help me not get ripped off

i got a 07 saturn vue. it was the last year they used the honda engines. got a 100 thousand on it now and not one hick up of any kind. i took it to a local repair shop and inquired on a tune up since i have started to notice just a slight hesitation when leaving from a complete stop. he told me they would replace every belt, new plugs, clean injectors and service the tranny.. 1500 buckaroo's. little sticker shock but does that sound close to fair??? any suggestions on a reliable shop in the olive branch area i can check prices with???

Seems high to me. But G or Cray are the guys to ask.

Basic tune up at a Ford dealer on an F-150 is around $600...depending on how many plugs they break, and they always break at least two. They charge an extra $100 for every plug "they" break.:banghead

I would shop around.....

I think they have a policy that says they must break at least 2!

I use Kar-Guard when I don't feel like I have the time or equipment to do the repair myself. They are located on Hwy. 51 just north of Rasco in Southaven. You might give them a call and see what they say. Kenny 662 342-0466. They do great work!

big h, i would rather not say on a public forum. i sure don't want to cause some bad publicity for anyone out there making a living. just want to get the best bang for my bucks....

You might check your parts prices at Napa just to see what they would cost, belts,plugs,tranny filter and about 8 qts of tranny fluid. Add 40% to that number and your pretty close to what he is charging for parts. Having never worked on one I'm figuring he's about 450 to 550 high. Did he quote you a shop labor rate? When they clean injectors they hook a hose to a fitting on fuel rail attach a can of cleaner and let her run. Haven't priced that cleaner in a long time.

Have you ever changed the belts?
First thing I would do is go to auto zone and get me a can of SeaFoam or a bottle of Lucas fuel addative/ injector cleaner and run it through the engine and see if the hesitation goes away.

i put a rebuild motor in my toyota truck for 1300 bucks so i would say a tune up for 1500 bucks is out of this world

thanks, guys, for all the good advice. gonna get on it in the morning. my daughter is going to jackson ms with her daughter in it for some type of cheer competition saturday and i just want it to be road worthy....

Get a couple of bottles of injector cleaner into the gas tank. I get mine at Dollar Tree, 2 bottles every 6 months.

I'd put some sea foam or injector cleaner in it first and drive a whole tank through it, and try to do it quickly. If that didn't do the trick, I'd throw a set of plugs and wires in it along with an air filter

Oh and put premium gas (don't be a cheaply) in it when you do the cleaner

A timing belt change is not bad idea at that mileage if it has a belt and most of the smaller engines do. With the price he quoted I would be willing to bet he was planning on doing that as well, at least I hope so.

Alot of smll car enigines meet their demise due to this being neglected.

Timing belt wouldn't be lumped in with the other belts, that's a whole different thing. Kind of a big deal.

Aint but one drive for the water pump, alt, ect.... when he said belts kinda led me to think the timing belt might be included and if it were would justify a good bit of the price.
I would get a detailed list of what he plans to do fo that money, it will be easie to compare that way.

an 07 model will be due belts,hoses,coolant...your owners manual will have a service guide.The money these guys want seems really high.
