What do you fellas consider a thropy crappie for these parts, or is it just in the eye of the beholder? I've only been crappie fishing since 2008 so most of you have lots of years on me but I've been lucky enough to catch 4 crappies that hit 2lbs with the biggest at 2lb 3 oz. I thought about getting them mounted but decided twice to let them go back swimming and twice to relocate them to lake cast iron skillet. So would you guy mount a 2lb crappie? What's your thoughts?
Its really a personal thing. If its a trophy to you then thats all that counts. I have only caught one crappie that weighed 3 pounds but a bunch that went 2 pounds 15 ounces, 2.14, 2.13 ect.. Is that one or two ounces really a difference between a trophy and not?
I gotta agree with Speck.Its all about what you think is a trophy. I dont have one mounted yet and have my personal weight for mounting one set at 3lbs but if i cuaght one 2.14 or so i sure would have a hard time not mounting it. If its a trophy to you i would say go for it.I cuaght one last spring during the spawn that weighed 2.13 and the only reason she is still swimming is she was full of eggs and i just wanted her to spawn. My family was there and just about had a fit when i slid her back in. But there will be others in the future to mount so once again if its a trophy to you go for it.

Caught a three #in Grenada Ms years ago, but it wasn't a pretty fish at all so she didn't make it to the wall.
I agree Kit those that ain't pretty ain't worth mounting..........
On Smithville anything over 10 inches is huge.

I feel a 2 lb crappie in MO is like a 160" deer. Most people will never be lucky enough to catch one or kill one. I have caught 2 fish over two lbs on Truman and one in a strip pit. Never had the money then to get one mounted. But if I get lucky enough to catch another over 2 lbs it will be hanging on the wall.
Like Jared said anything over two pounds, I think you have a better chance of catching a trophy Crappie in a farm pond or strip pit.
2lbs and up are trophies on Martin .... This is our big fish this yr.
It will be on the wall when a 2 pounder comes in the boat. I've been close but it hasn't happened yet!

I used to think 2lb I would mount. When I got the 2.4+ on Longview, I changed it to 3lb. Now, I don't think I'd mount one at all. The thrill is worth more to me then having to dust the darn thing off every week or 2 on the wall. Nothing wrong with getting a mount done, just not my thing. I might frame a pic though, or use that pic on a fishing website as my avatar. :yikes
last year at a lake up here around Marshall my mom caught a 19 in 2 1/2 pounder.. real nice fish
I'd say 2 pounds is trophy here in missouri. Or if you go by inches 15" or bigger is a big fish. Now in other states or well just one thats considered a dandy. But If I catch a 2 pounder out of a lake in MO he's going up on the wall.
I got one--- one time to the top of the water that would of been 18 to 19 inches.. Got off ---i said a few choices words out loud and havn't caught any thing big since..
I haven't weighed any crappies, we go by inches. I have yet to break 16 inches and that would be my "trophy fish", course I probably wouldn't keep it or get it mounted but I would finally have an avatar pic with a big crappie in it!
once at twain my brother hooked a crappie and brought it to the top before it got away. biggest I have ever seen by a LONG shot, bigger than what bass pro has in their aquariums.... we had a 18 inch drum in the boat that day and that crappie looked to be a quit a bit bigger than the drum. good times!
For the wall gotta be over 3lbs

My first went on the wall....2 lb 3 oz.......then a 2 lb 9 oz. Probally 15 in between. Biggest ever 2 lb 10 oz. Both done 20 years ago or longer. Waiting on a 3 lber now.

Alot of MS fellows weighin... That dont count...lol. My biggest was 3.7 and it came from the great state of MS!
In MO a 2# fish is a hog.

Caught a 2#-8oz 17" a couple of years ago and started crappie fishing around 2008 also but just ate it oh and won the contest at the cannon dam store for a 100 bucks
That's a dandy for sure. Congrats.
2 lb. is a trophy to me, they are few and far between Mo.

I would taken a limit of eaters any day over a few biguns. To me a trophy is a platter of golden fillets on the dinner table!!!!
I believe it is anything 16 inches or over, but that is my personal goal for a trophy to mount, I may not put it on the wall even then because,,... I also believe it could be much smaller in size,,... for there may be a greater reason for a certain fish to be mounted,,... as in a personal experience of being who you were with, or the day, or the place. I have caught a 16"-er but thought the egg laden female would be better if it could still serve the small lake I was fishing in so,,... so gave it back for seed.
To each his, or her own, when it comes to the size of a trophy CRAPPIE. Good luck on all the personal goals for a trophy CRAPPIE!
I believe also that sometimes, it's only in the trying, and fishing, with no catching at all, and one can only hang that, on the memory bank of a heart to rely on,,... for any possible, rainy days, down the road! Ahhhh, remember when....
Looks like I may not have realized how lucky I've been to catch those fish in MO, here's the breakdown: 10yrs ago I caught a 17 1/2 black crappie out of Prairie Lee Lake in Lee's Summit which was the biggest and prettiest looking crappie I've ever seen but I let him go with no pics and only one witness. In the spring of 2011 I caught a two pounder 2 weeks in a row spider rigging Smithville which went in the skillet, and this past November I caught the last 2lber at Truman which I let go. The first 2 pics is of the first 2lber I caught at Smithville and the last pic is of the 2lber I caught a week later at Smithville. Only problem now that I'm thinking about having a fish mounted I probably won't catch anything that size again LOL!
I would never mount a fish again, had a 8# largemouth and a 15# striper mounted and they both ended up looking rotten in 5 years........ I mount mine with the Kodak and release to be caught again....
My son caught a 15.5" black right before Christmas. We took pics and measured it. We are gonna get a replica made of it. Bass Pro said about $225. Attachment 112898
