Never been there, but may be relocating there in the next few months. Would be in the Ponca City area. Would like to know about the area, climate, etc. We have small kids so I need a good neighborhood for them. Oh, and if I can't fish, I ain't going.
Here's a link to the official 'about Ponca City' web site. I'm not from there but it seems to be a nice size town. Kaw Lake isn't mentioned lots on our state site because there are not a lot of members from there. It has a reputation for big slabs, hybrid whites (wipers) and catfish. The Oklahoma tournament guys are having their Jan crappie tournament on that lake. I also believe Crappie Chatt, a Kansas guide fishes there some. I've only heard good things of that area, with one exception, and I used to bird hunt lots around there and enjoyed it. The only thing that I know of that's not favorable is the wind, but that's an Oklahoma thing.
There is a member of Okshooters.com that is a hunter and fisherman and lives in the area. He is dennishoddy on that site. You might contact him for more city specific info, particularly schools.

Come on down; lots of good folks in Oklahoma. Wind?--ohhh maybe a little now and then! :) But hey, we manage. My wife's best friend was a public school teacher in Ponca for 20+ years. It was always a good place for us to go visit. Like Ranger said, several good lakes around. Welcome to Okie land. And see, I didn't even mention football!
Thanks for all the replies. I haven't gotten the job yet so it's all still speculation at this point. But I want to have as much info on the front end so we aren't in a fizz if/when the time comes to go. I am guessing most houses there will have a storm shelter? We don't get many tornadoes here, but I am sure they are a regular visitor there.
Oh, and talk football all you want. My team (both college and NFL) sucks (for now) and I've come to terms with it.

Homes in Kansas have basements. Few homes in Oklahoma have tornado shelters. That's usually extra. However, there are several companies that make tornado safe rooms out of steel that can be bolted onto a slab in a garage.
As for Kaw lake? Man, you'd have a blast with the crappie there. My trip today was enough to make me want to go back.
Welcome from all us Okies, I sure understand you considering the fishin before you move. No worries there, as the guys have said Kaw is close and its a good crappie lake. Plenty of other good crappie lakes close by too. If you want some help on Oologah lake I'd be glad to help you out. Lots of good folks here, I'm sure you won't have any trouble getting some helpful advice where ever you decide to wet a hook.

I too would extend a warm Oklahoma welcome. I hunt in the Blackwell area. I fish all over the state. Kaw is closest to you. Pawhuska City lake is a great fishing trip. Beautiful Country and lots of Blue Gill. You can catch some really large Rainbow trout there too. Yup I said Rainbow Trout. Caught some real nice ones trying to catch Crappie. Ask me sometime if you go there and I will tell you what I was doing. It is an East to West Lake in a basin so not too much wind. Hope you are enjoying Oklahoma.
