Fishing in the winter

I have never fished in the winter on cold days. I hear tell they bite good on days like today. I've been out in my boat in the shed rerigging some poles and thinking about what it would be like on the lake. Bet it's 10 degrees colder out there, and after 30 minutes this morning I had to come in and thaw out my fingers so I could go back and rig another pole. I've got to figure out how to dress in this kinda weather too, and it's not really that cold this morning. It's my hands more than anything else. Any suggestions?

Take more clothes than you need.....You may need them.

Try ya a pair of those new rechargeable battery operated gloves. Can't remember where I saw them, but I think it was Bass Pro. They make a coat, bibs, pants, caps, gloves, etc. like that now.

under armors man, get you some. Those and some Bibs. I love the winter time fishing but man, when you have to reach in for a minner. BRRRRRRRRRRRR LOL I think the coldest I've ever fished in was a couple years ago when there was a 1/2 inch of Ice over in Pelahatchie Bay near the bridge. I got just outside it on the river channel and catch the fool out of em. It was scary breaking Ice with the boat though. Felt like I was on Deadliest Catch

OH, get you some of BIG hand warmers from BP. The ones in the pack you just open and they start warmin. Put a couple in each coat pocket to warm your hands. Retieing is rough when you can't feel your fangers

This is what I use on really cold days. I have mine sittin in a milk crate behind me. It helps out more than you would think.

Dont go till it gets over 45deg.

Feet and Hands. I bought a pair of those booties by Artic Shield for hunters that slip on over your shoes that work pretty good. Got one of those hand warmer things that go around your waist like football players use. It has a pocket inside to put chemical warmers in. got both from BassPro. Like DD said i cant do anything when fingers get cold.

I may have to try those bootie Cray is talking about. Heated gloves BigRiver?:dono, never seen them any where.

Layers with the putter layer being wind proof like the guide wear or 100 mph bps stuff. Hand Warner's in your pockets and keep a towel handy to dry your hands. In extreme conditions the heater will work too.

Gloves for running the lake and something for your face too. I suggested paper bags for triton but he said they kept blowing off.

Truth be told though, even on very cold days its not that bad if you wait till 9 or 10 to launch as long as the wind is not up. You can be pretty comfortable on bright days in freezing temps when the sun is out and little to no wind.

Thanks, I'm liking what WB said bout the 9-10 and what Mr Jim said bout the 45+. But I'm still gona try it the first day the wind is under 5. Remember this RHIP thing? Well, some of us say the R is for retirememt.
I have a lot of hunting clothes and I'll start there with the addition of some of those hand warmers and the towels I always have anyway. Fishings gotta be really good to go with the propane tank, I think..

I use the small propane catalic heater that takes the little 16 0z bottle, and get about 3 trips per tank, warms up the wet gloves, but have ruined some jersey gloves, when you smell them it is to late.............

Why yall get your hands wet getting minners?????:donoI just put less water in the bucket and prop the net accross the top where the minners aint in no water when I get em, then just lower the net back into the water. Makes a big difference.

What he said....cept I don't know bout the $50-60 part. Keep the top of your head covered. A neck gator is a must for me....and my ole Elmer Fudd hat if its really, really cold...

Good point. Going through SCUBA training, learned that 25% of heat loss was from the head. Get a good hat.

And also I agree with Rees on not grabbing minnows from a submerged net. Let them drain a second or two, and they are a lot easier to handle. A towel of some kind helps too. The wind is the worst enemy during winter, which a good rain suit helps with fighting the wind.

I had a radar oreilly speshul one time that was gore-tex. Dang thing was too hot for deer hunting. Bet it' be the ticket for fishing.
