Ok guys going buy a new trolling battery whats the best for the money, and where do I get it? thanks guys.
Trojan battery's are the best I have found yet and they last a long time, they hold a charge like no other battery on the market, I have. 24v trolling system and I can fish between 2 and four days without a recharge depending on what type of fishing I do, if I am fishing a bass tournament I can get 2, 8 hr days out of one charge, if I am spidder rigging for crappie I can get four days of fishing from one charge. These battery's are a little pricy but mine last me around 3 to 4 years before needing to replace them, I fish on average every weekend and most every afternoon in the spring and summer months. You can buy the 27 series Trojans at Conway tire and battery in Conway AR.
There a lot of good info in here. I all go cheep.

Get the Golf Cart Batteries. Best on the market. I have them. Less than the Trojans, and more reserve amps. I do sell Trojans, and Optima also, but I use the 12v golf cart batteries from US Battery. I can pull cranks for 8hrs at 2mph into the wind, and still have 50% charge left.
I never leave my batteries uncharged overnight if I can help it. It isn't good for em. First thing I do when I get home is plug in the charger!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info on the trojan guru and also on the golf cart batteries brm ill be checking them bothe out. I'm lucky to get 18 months out of my wal-mart specials
Thanks for the info I am looking into new batteries as well. My exides keep dying in under a year. This time it has only been 8 months.
I agree that sometimes it's impossible to charge when you are in certain situations. The US Battery still has more reserve amps than the Trojans, Optimas, Marine Masters, etc., and they are about 75-100 bucks less money. I've been fortunate enough in the boat business to have tried all the batteries out there, and it's the 12v golf cart batteries for me.
BTW, while on those remote trips, they do offer charge packs, and charging systems that work through your vehicles electrical system.

I know those too!!! I use whatever I have at the time, but I PREFER a cranker with at least 850 CCA, 1000 is better. Most heavy duty crankers hold up well. I've used the 450-550 CCA's, but they just don't last as long, especially if you discharge them (go fishing) a lot.

The cart batts BRM speaks of are THE BOMB in trolling batts. My 101 I-pilot pulls my boat at 3.6 turned all the way up and pulling at 1.8 it litterly will pull for days when pulling cranks. For the price and the way they last you will be money ahead in the long run.
BRM are you using two 12 volt batteries on a 24 volt system and is it as good using two 12 volts on a 12 volt system or should you get two of the 6 volt for your 12 volt system?
I use two 12's in series on a 24v system. Most use two twelves in parallel on a 12v system. Two 6's should work tho. It's just not as common to find a GOOD 6v battery when ya need one. I've never done it like that, but there may be someone on here that has.
Great question about the 6v's, sorry I don't have a better answer.

BRM.... Glad you posted that you keep your batteries on charge every nite.... I was told to let mine run down before I charged it by a buddie. I'll start charging mine each nite also, I 've used mine 4 days and still have 3/4 charge....
I don't charge them every night, but I charge them as soon as I get back from using them. I don't wait till the day before I go again. That'll kill em much quicker by doing that. Bout half the life or less. I never run mine all the way down if I can help it, but if I did, I would IMMEDIATELY go re charge them.

What size are those golf Cary batteries and will they fit in a standard battery box. Is the weight comparable to standard batteries.
Mid South, Ozark Rods and Hi Tek Pro Staff.
They weigh about 99lbs. They fit in a 31 series box or tray. They are a bit taller than a standard battery, but they will fit in most applications.

BTW, you can go to the US Battery website and get the specs. They are called a 12v CX2 I think.

I have never thought of using Golf Cart batteries, but I'll keep that in mind. I usee the WalMart Maxx batteries and have have good luck with them. I use a 24V minn Kota Trolling Motor and I can get 2 days of trolling out of them with no problem. I am on my 4th year with these batteries now and I can't help but wonder when they will let me down. I can't say anything bad about them at all.
Seems like we have some experts on this subject; I have a question if I may....
My boat came equiped with a 24 group 12v. I have also added a 27 group 12v with an "either/or" switch. Neither battery will last more than about 30 minuets while pulling at 1.8 MPH. They will go another couple of hours maybe at 1 MPH or less. The 24 is a couple of years old. When it started acting this way, I rigged the 27 group. I have tried charging them with two different chargers.
Do you think both batteries are capoot? Or do I have a bad TM pulling too many amps? It really is a PITA no more fishing than I get to do.
DP
What kinda trolling motor is it?? I had a 12v 55 pound thrust and it would do the job but had to run a kicker on the back for a few hours and run 2 batts parralel to get 7 or 8 hours out of it. The higher you run the troller the more amps you are drawing and eats batts quick. If you are running a 12v troller I would say this has a lot to do with it. Another tip that will make a BIG difference when pulling cranks is to raise the big motor completely our of the water, speeded me up about 2 tenths just doing that which allowed me to turn the troller down using less juice. Good luck.
I'm running a 55pd 12V Power drive and BRM just hooked me up with 2 of the golf cart batteries. I will let you know after Christmas how it turned out.
I can hear the praises now. BWAHAHAHAHA

Check the wiring to to the trolling motor too. I have 12 gauge in the boat now, it will be 8 in the spring.
12 is really small. Sure it isn't 10? If you're going to redo it, might as well pay a little more and go with 6ga. 8 will work but the 6 will handle more amperage, and have less resistance.

I used welding wire from the battery (back of the boat) to the front. Works great. However, couldn't you also use heavy duty battery cables also? Wouldn't they be cheaper than wire purchased from Cabelas, etc.?
I buy wire in bulk spools. Quality Battery Cable wire is good if you can get it long enough.

Never short change your self on the quality of good trolling motor wiring, it important not only to the trolling motor but also the life of the batteries.
Before I read any of the other posts, Interstate batterys are hard to beat! They ain't that much more expensive and in my book they compare to Optima but at a fraction of that cost at just over $100 where the Optima's will run you closer to $200 for a deep cell. I had a buddy to buy a new boat a few years ago and he kept it for 5 years and never changed a battery. He looked at them and they were all Interstates.
Those Walmart specials will get you about a year and that's it. I have a buddy who always buys walmart, keep the receipt and returns them for a free battery before the year warranty is up. I'd just rather get the better ones to begin with so I don't have to mess with it every year.
Interstate owns Optima. The big Optima cost 250-275.

He's right, I was shocked to see it myself but if you go on the Interstate website you'll see Optima's as well. Same quality in my book just at a cheaper more manageable price. Now to add to what others have said I've never tried the gold cart batteries so I can't speak for them but they may be a better option.
I'm also right about the US Battery 12v Golf Cart batteries. As I've said before, being in the boat business has given me the opportunity to try them all, and I'm happy to share that experience with my C.C brothers. Through my trials and errors, I hope I can help you make a more educated purchase, and save you money in the LONG run!
Don't sound so shocked that I was right. Even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in awhile!!! LMBO. ;-)
