Do you use scents?

Yesterday, I got to finally test some jigs my self...fished with a new friend, He used a scent on all his jigs? Now in bass fishing it was a given, I always used scents...so why not with marabou or hackle??? Good question....hey found a color combo that was lights out...out caught ever color used even the curly tails I was challanging...the curly tails, and the tails won yesterday...but I know the hand ties day is coming....so tell me shuuuushsss I wont tell do you use scents:dono I think I'm going to start fooling with it!Attachment 107486Here is the little jig that could!!

That is a good color combo. Also try it with a light blue head, you will be surprised. Been playing around with different scents on baits but so far I have not been impressed with any of them. From my testing a good spinner helps more than scent and I'm really liking the inline spinners.

I have tried them for 6 months and I see no better bite with them compared to a jig without. I know most that use them are spider rigging so they may help if a jig is moving slow but for longlining or casting a jig they don't stay on a hook long enough to work, even when dried out some.

I do not unless I am using say a Slab Bandit that comes with it already cooked in it. I have always sued it with soft plastics even when they didn't come that was back in the bass fishing days. If I was going to use it though I am thinking I would use some pure shad oil I have. I also believe a spinner blade is more imporant at times then scent and os why I use a Roadrunner so much in my spring fishing. I am getting the supplies to try the inline ones too.

Pulled a blade bait yesterday with no luck...in my short time of pulling blades mine are slightly heaver and have produced the larger fish...nothing yesterday!

In the spring I pull my Roadrunner in 1/32 and just slow up a little for deeper. I have used them and caught fish from 3' of water to 20' of water, but only did the 20' on a few occasions and one time was last year because after our drought and no hydrilla shallow the crappie just hung out in deep water suspended and was 17' to 20' of water. I usually though will fish 6' to 7' of water and sometimes 10' to 13' water. Also think bigger crappie in spring comes in a little deeper water unless you find them on the bank in just a couple feet of water. Long time back when I first started long lining back in the late 1970's in the fall there was a 14' deep place with huge drop off on both sides covered with hydrilla I just hammered them in that 14' of water with Roadrunners.

Adding scent to a jig satisfies another of the fish senses. If the jig looks good,smells good and tastes good you will have a fish in the boat.
I am not a gambler so I up my odds and use Power Bait for added scent year around.

Hey Donald I've seen that BANG stuff at Wal-Mart I believe. Is it just 1 scent or do they have several different scents? Just curious if they have several which scent do you use. One year I tried to use fish oil on my jigs which I didn't think helped much. lol... Mostly I use crappie nibbles but I would be open to looking at other scents.

they have several different scents but to me the best is the shad scent

I have threatened to use some shad oil. I bought some a while back that is pure shad oil and I just tried it once on chenille jigs, but don't think that stuff will ever come out, but I am thinking now that maybe your right I should try it on kip tail jigs.

I love the Bang Garlic. Hand tied jigs hold scent real well.

ordered a custom crappie scent off the web that is oil based. No idea if it works or not....I guess the test would be one of us using it and another one not while fishing using the same jigs and such.

Donald, I used to use Berkley crappie maggots (they are smaller than crappie nibbles) only when the fishing had slowed down, as an edge, but last couple of years I add a half piece of chart. crappie maggot whenever I fish hair or tube jigs and the numbers of bites has really gone up....(that was a long sentence). I have not tried liquid scents but imagine the principle is the same, appeal to another of the fishes senses. Fishing is hard enough, I'll use every advantage I can get.......BC

During the hard water season when many times a small lure is the order of the day( 1/64 to 1/32 once with a # 12 or #10 hook I end up cutting the nibbles in 1/2 or 1/3 to fit the smaller lures. The small piece of scent does not interfere with the lure action or looks.

Have used scent on jigs a lot. Crappie nibbles in tubes and Berkley alive one inch minnow threaded on the inside of a Kiptail jig. Also take a jig and put just neck hackle just behind the head and thread the B.A.M. on the hook,it is working great in our cold water now up here. It has a very slow drop just the way the crappies like it right now. Have a great winter season. STEVE

I know this is a old thread but I have a fish story that made me a believer last spring. Me and my dad were at the local hole last spring and were pulling crappie out under a big dock. You actually had to lay on your side and shoot it to get your jig to the fish. Anyway after we got probally 20 that we kept and another 30 that were under 9" and thrown back They got slow, Except for the little ones. I took some "anise smelly jelly" from when I went salmon fishing and smeared that on my jig. I swear that probally the next 6-8 fish were the biggest we caught and they followed my jig back almost to the boat. I would be retreaving fast to be ready to throw again and it would be 2 foot from the boat and they would grab it! If I reeled faster they might have jumped in, lol. Anyway I doupt if I use it every time, but I will keep a jar in my box. Just in case.

I use cod liver oil pills,just use the jig hook to poke hole in pill and squirt it on every now and then...works good for me,smells just like shad !

Decades ago, when Original Fish Formula (an anise-scented oil) came out, I squirted some on the chenille body of a crappie jig with a marabou tail. Unfortunately, the oil flowed down onto the marabou and caused it to clump together in a stiff mass; it wouldn't move underwater in the way that lets marabou give life to a jig. Though I had just caught a crappie on a bass lure (suggesting an aggressive feeding mood), I couldn't get one to hit the oiled jig, and couldn't work the oil out of the feathers holding the jig in the water (had to use detergent later at home).

JuHair would probably be less likely to clump, but I've been leery of applying oil-based scent products to anything but plastics since.

most of the scents seem to have an oil base - when you squirt the oily scent on a maribu or hackle, it matts down the fiber - kip tail or bucktail seems a little more forgiving. If I feel the need for scent when using a feathered jig or fly, I'll use a Crappie Nibble.

I only use Crappie Nibbles for scent. Oil based scents are just too messy, and they clump up feathers and fine hair. Plus they sometimes leak when it gets really hot and stink up your tackle box. Especially the ones with garlic. Everything ends up smelling like an Italian restaurant.

Do Old Spice or English Leather count?

mix some water, cooking oil, sea salt, garlic salt and anise in a pyrex cup. Place in microwave 60 seconds. Stir. Let cool, then place some in your bags of lures.
