Not an ice fisherman but neat looking reel but at 99.00 seems steep for ice fishing.
Rico, I have never seen anyone with a fly reel on an ice rod around here. The reel in the picture looks pretty sharp. First time I ever heard of it..
Well they aint actually fly reels persay. Basically an inverted schooley reel with features. The concept behind them is to prevent line twist. Here is another one that is about $10 cheaper!!!!!!!!!!

It is kind of funny. I grew up fishing through the ice. It was just what my family did. But in all my years, I have never taken someone for the first time that they didnt love it. It is highly addictive. And with the equipment they got these days it is quite comfortable......no more freezing your arsz off. Nice and toasty in the shack......and the electronics are something else. As I said, you ever make it up this way in the winter and I will set you up!!!!!!
These Ice Fishing Fly reels are super nice. Nice free fall, super retrieve with the 2.6 ratio. Great drag. I have been using one for 2 weeks now.

They sure look good. What kind of line do you put on them? I have an old fly reel in the garage, would it work for ice fishing? Ya'll have done peaked my interest...
This is the reel that comes on the new combo I picked up. Its entry level I'm sure; I'll be curious as to how it will feel in action. Genz Ice spooler from Cabela's. $25 or so.

Bee, it looks like an Eagle Claw from the picture but I went to their website and don't see it there. Do you have a model # and stuff? Ken
I bought one of the Frabill Straightline combo's last year but didn't get to use it because of no safe ice!!!:banghead
Well, I just orderd the Genz Ice Spooler from Cabelas. I got the 23". It was $39.99 and with tax and shipping it came to $51.88 I had a $50 gift card so al I had to pay was $1.88 Thanks Guys....
Those look like they would make a awesom jig pole reel. Especially fishing in deeper water.
What line size do you put on these reels? Is it redular ice fishing line? Thanks.
Yes C-1, whatever kind of line you use for icefishing in your neck of the woods.
I use a nylon tip-up line 30 lb test to fill the spool 7/8 full. Any type of inexpensive line will work as a filler. I then put on some layers of 10 LB mono backing line. I weave the line from side to side on the spool to cover the gaps cause by the nylon line. Lastly I add some winter line, Fireline crystal or Bionic Ice line in 2 to 4 lb test.Attachment 107566
another desent flyreel is the LLbean quest2. its made of composite material
they are on sale for 24.95 with free shipping now. Fly Reels: Fishing Gear | Free Shipping at L.L.Bean
I hold the line between my thumb and four finger so the line is tight on the spool. I try to keep the layers of line as flat as possible. This eliminates voids for the ice line to get hung up in. This is another reason to use mono backing line as the fine ice line likes to get hung up in any voids.
Ok, thanks all you guys for the help. Rod & reel should be here by Dec. 4th. and the way the weather has been last day or two, it might get here just in time for the ice...

Clam Dave Genz Ice Spooler Ice Fishing Reel 9173$24.99 One thing I noticed looking at all these reels. Most of them do not have room for your hand to hold them. They sit tight to the rod in the reel seat, where as the Genz has more room for your hand to be able to hang on to it..
The extra neck length is exactly the reason I bought my combo. The Frabils were awkward to grip with the reel tight to the rod and I knew that I wanted a fly reel style versus a spinning reel.
I just head about these in line reels yesterday. I have spent a good bit of time looking at differend models. I think the longer stem on the reels would make it a good choice...
I like the longer foot on the reel myself........but I have seen guys move the reels up on the rod handle.
I was on another forum yesterday. And a guy on there said they ice up bad. I don't think he ever used one, just going by here say. Do you have trouble with them iceing up?
I have never used one either, but have been checking them out for a few years now. From some of the stuff that I have read and what dealers have told me, some guys have said that the ones where the spool is made out of milled aluminum have had some issues with them icing up. Basically the line freezing to the spool. But none of the few guys that I know that use them have voiced that problem.......but I could see where it could happen.
Well, I got my Dave Genz Ice Spooler in the mail (UPS) yesterday. It's a pretty nice combo. The rod seems a little stiff for a light action. I think you could land about anything with it. The reel is good construction. All in all I'm happy with it. It has a nice drag on it. Will get some line on it and see how it does. Good deal for the money. Shipping was $8.95, that seemed a little high, but it came quick and in good shape.
I will check the reels out at the ice fishing show this weekend.
Hopefully I can find a reel that has a free spool tha will allow the drag to be disengaged when letting line out. I don't know if there is a reel system like this.
Both of my present reel have engaged drags when letting out line and I end up using little or no drag. If I need drag on a large fish I end up putting finger pressure on the spool.
