Don't know what you need hinges on but... I use old rubber jacketed fire hose to make cooler hinges. Much more durable than leather. I can get probably get you some or check with your local station and see if they have some old hose laying around.
Thanks Sat, Melissa and G but I passed my neighborhood fire station before any of those. Walked in & they were in the middle of dive rescue training, told them that I used to get the same training in that room. They asked what I needed & I read them the hose description on Feelay's post, guy got up said "drive around the other side of the station". Met him in the bay & he said I could have the whole hose if I wanted it (it wasn't new). I would never use that much so he cut me a 2' piece of 3" hose and I was on my way. Thanks Feelay, and I'm going to use them for cooler hinges too.

I fixed a leather handled hammer once with a pair of work boots. The leather wasn't as tight as a new handle. But it was fixed and cheap.

Sounds like the fire hose is some tuff stuff. I used to get old rubber belting from the brick plant I worked at and made them out of it also. Its tuff as well.
