I asked my son to cut me a peice of chain to use as a wind/trolling drag to help slow down my boat. His question...... 3/4 inch or 1 inch links? My question to you guys........
How much chain do I need, what size does it need to be, or is it more about the weight than size and length. Gimme some direction on what you use and why...
I use 1" cut into 5' lengths and use a shackle to join them. I have 3 total so I can adjust for speed/conditions.
I drag 2 with 25 foot of rope out, not sure what size but they are 5 foot long. Gonna cut me 2 more 5 foot lengths to hook to them for days like yezterday and Saturday

Just go buy a drift sock or two!
2 drift socks that will hold as good as 2 chains, 150 bucks. 2 sets of chains and rope, 30 bucks. No doubt in timber the socks may have an advantage but with the 101 i have able to pull em loose when they hang so far.

I know this is:deadhorsebut here goes anywho. You can sometimes get by without adding weight or extra chain just by lengthening the rope on your chain. Longer rope will pull harder than a short one. JMO. Think someone already brought this up before. I have noticed that chains will slow ya down toooo much at times REES. Sat when we were up there they wanted it moving a little faster than last couple of weeks for some reason. When we first put socks out we thought we were gonna be moving too fast but just as soon as they grabbed we started catching the hech outta them. Guess we was moving at just the right speed with them/

With the Terrova moving too slow aint a issue, set it and roll. I was dragging chains at 1.6 yesterday moving back out to make another run.:biggrinQuote:

I am not tryin to step on any toes or stir any pot, but there Aint no way I would rather run my trollin motor to have to move when I can just drop 1 or 2 socks and just sit back and watch the poles go down, that being said me and Feesh dont have no terrova or nuttin, but If a terrova makes you catch that many more fesh, If I ever buy one I might otta go ahead and buy another deep freezer also. Gonna keep on runnin my 13 yr old 24 volt MG till it blows up. Feesh has got a set of chains if we ever need them but we use them as weight in the front of his boat to hold it down, when we fish in my boat I just pump the big livewell in the front of my boat full of water to hold it down. Works for us.
Not stepping on no toes I dont think, everyone has their way, it works for you go for it. I know it works for yall, seen it in action. Dont know what kinda chains Feesh has but mine aint enuff to make a weight difference in my boat. Yall coming up Saturday?
I cant make it Sat John, gotta go to New Albany Fri. nite and it will be after midnite before I get home. May fish Sun. Was gonna fish the Mcc tourny Sat but sho aint no way I can get home at 1 am then be down there to register at 5 am.
Rees, they weigh about a 'hunerd lbs. combined. I have not used them for anything but ballast since i bought my socks, and we've been in some ruff stuff. Ask ShineRunner if he thinks there be a difference between chains and socks.

Tru dat. But last time I tried to get this question figured out, the thread got locked. Glad this one is still rolling. The socks worked way better that day then the chain we were dragging. I was amazed how ya'll drug them thru the wood with no problems. We needed a bigger chain or two for that tank we were in, but I am pretty sure two XL socks would have let us fish more. How does the "two 5 gallon bucket" solution compare to the drift sock solution. It is almost christmas time and Im not sure I want to spend my money on a drift sock when I can go by the shop and pick up a pair of transmission fluid buckets for free......Quote:

Shine you need to watch Cabelas Bargin bin for deals on socks. I try to remember to check once a week. They have some pretty good deals some time. I bought a 72 vinyl last year for 12.00 and this spring got 2 Large of the really nice ones for 29.00 plus shipping. That's for the pair. I searched and searched and they have the best deals I could find.
Take yor bucket, remove handle, drill hole below ridges on the top, run a piece of 1/2 in rope through holes and tie into a harness. Use a good piece of rope hooked to the harness. Drill a small hole in bottom lip and tie a longer length of small line to that hole to use for a dump line. Won't make it that much easier to get in but might help a little. You could also drill about 3 1in holes in bottom. Not great but they will work until you can find a deal.
