If the will appoints you as the Personal Representative or Executor of the estate, I suggest you find a lawyer that deals in estates or estate planning on a regular basis. Not familar with MS estate law, but do have 1st hand experience with FL and TN estate law. The lawyer just keeps the PR or Executor out of legal trouble. The PR/Executor does 90% of the work. Some estates can be nothing but mine fields. GL
Where's WB when ya need him
jimp is right, in most states you are better off just letting an attorney handle it. However, that depends on the size of the estate. Some states, especially if the size of the estate is fairly small, you can file the probate documents yourself for a very small fee assuming you are the personal representative named in the will. I would call the probate court first and ask about their filing fees. If there is an amount due to the estate that is fairly small (last I looked for MS was around 30K) you may not need to go through probate and you can file a small estate affidavit to claim the money on behalf of the estate. You can look up the small estate statutes as they may have increased this amount (most states have). I deal with estates everyday, although I don't see many in MS.
