I'm refinishing mine and not sure what to finish it with. I'm sanding it down, then gonna stain it. Does it need a poly coat? If so, water or oil based? I don;t want to have to lightly sand between coats if I have to use more than one coat

DD, i would , it will help keep down on wear spots that will cause to color to become uneven

Cover with composit and fer get it,bout maint free.
DD the final coat or sealer depends on what ya want. If ya want a shine to em use high gloss poly. If ya dont use a satin or low gloss. Now if you want them to be real nice sand em, then stain em, then sand em with real fine like 280 or higher and one more coat of poly. Now if ya want the easy way out sand em then stain em then wipe em down really good with a damp mop then put Spar on them. Spar is a marine poly that is very very durable.
