Sinking boat nearly results in drowning at Mississinewa Reservoir

Gotta wear those life jackets.
doh! thats some wave action!
first of all let me say "I won't get in my boat without my life jacket". The real question is would a life jacket have helped him before he got his foot un-trapped from whatever it was caught in? Just saying that if his foot wasn't caught in something he probably wouldn't have went down in the first place. Just another reason to keep your boat tidy and keep unused gear stowed AND your life jacket on. He's very fortunate that he got his foot out and made it to the surface.
Wow!!!!!!!!! Glad he is alive to tell the story. It just goes to show that things can go terribly wrong in a hurry. Sometimes, no matter how prepared we think we are, the unexpected happens. A set of circumstances were put into motion in this case and a tragedy nearly happened. Sounds to me like the biggest factor was way too much weight in the back of a small craft.
None of the COE lakes are compatible with a 12 foot fishing boat. There is no splash well on the back to catch a wave.
It would be fine at Huntington. But you are right there are a lot of lakes where you need a bigger and better craft. I have been guilty of it myself quite a few times. A 12 ft boat does not work well when there are white caps on Summit! Hell it doesnt work well at Winona with all the skiiers out there. Probably wasnt the first time he had been out in that boat there, but it very well probably was his last.
There was a ole boy yesterday on missy in a 12' flatbottom and only a trolling motor. I see small boats all the time out there. People are Crazy!!!
Big brother is always looking for more laws to come up with. I can see it now. No more 12ft boats or smaller on large bodies of water.:popcorn
We all see smaller boats on larger bodies of water everyday. I'll be the first to admit that I have been one of those people. I fished out of a 14 ft Bass Tracker and between the Water Lice and wind, it was dangerous, so I started fishing at night when the water was calmer. Now, there is no way I'd get on any body of water, other than a pond, in a small boat...It just aint safe!! And alot of time it's the larger boats that make conditions unsafe for the smaller crafts. I have a 17 ft fiberglass boat for the past 3 years and I have had many days I got a little nervous in it. We just all need to use good sense and have courtesy for all other boaters, especially the smaller boats.....And wear those PFD's!!
Very well said TnT!!!!!!!
I fish out of a small boat quite a bit. I learned along time ago that there were certain lakes and weather conditions that just werent suitable for my small craft, at least to be out in the main body of water. Good judgement and sense goes along way.
I have one boat, a 10' flat bottom jon with a 3 hp 1956 evinrude, I'ts what I can afford, had it for 10 years. I fish Missy and Sally alot from spring to fall, also Hoffman and Pike lake even been on Winona ( I don't consider any to be "big" water not safe for small craft). I have even been on Missy during rain and wind and took on water with two people in the boat. I have NEVER felt unsafe or in danger one time. I have even been "rocked" by jerks flying by at high speeds, still no sense of danger. My boat is (here's the key/boating 101), BALANCED. The local paper said he had to much weight in the back, to big of a motor and was sitting to low in the water in the rear. It's not the size of the boat they should restrict on the water it's the amount of common sense, or lack there of. I see nothing wrong with a well balanced jon boat on any of the lakes around here as long as common sense is used. Okay rant off :bash
LOL kyron...........tell us how you really feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hoffman huh?
What is water lice?
I have fished for 25 years in a 12 footer allweld. I never had a problem and I fish Monroe and all the big lakes. It is 5.5 feet wide with a 15 hp motor and will go anywhere. More laws I think my freedom has been taken away enough. Leave me alone Government.
It seems the general consensus says "Brains/Experience" is the key here!
I would have to agree. I have a 15ft flat bottom Tracker with 15hp, while the motor is a bit undersized at times depending o how many ppl are in the boat. I don't do stupid things and I slow down when it gets rough, find a cove, or go home.
Accidents will and do happen though.
