merc 90 ELPTO question

I posted this in main forums as well, but I figured one of you local guys might be more likely to have some advice. Whether or not it will be good advice, well......:biggrin

The warning horn is sounding on my motor. According to the owners manual this can be for two reasons. 1- an overheated engine or 2- low oil in the injection tank.
Oil tank is full. Good water flow from motor.

The Horn sounds immediatly upon turning the key to the run position, so I doubt overheating is problem. Motor was a bit difficult to crank this morning, but after a few tries, it cranked and ran smothly, though the horn continued to sound as long as key was in run position. I fished several hours, turned key on, horn immediatly began to sound. Motor cranked and ran smothly back to landing.

Do the sending units for the horn go out? Is there some other malfunction here that I am missing? Would it be unwise to hear back to the lake after church tomorrow and just take my chances?

Sounds like a sensor gone out, is it using any mixxing oil? Could be the oiler is not working.

My mechanic said its a common problem and instructed me to unplug the blue wire coming out of the sending unit and it worked. I never had anything else done ot it.

I have read several reports on the mechanics board about those low oil sensors going bad. Might post it over there. But that's what it sounds like to me.

I did not run the main enough to really tell if it was using oil or not, John. I was a little nervous about crossing the lake with horn sounding so I just fished out from the landing. I only used motor to launch and load the boat.

You werent in a bad place tho. I would be careful not replacing that sensor if that is that it is, friend ruined one last year cause he had undone the sensor wire and it got low and screwed things up.

On a merc, a continuous long beep is an overheat condition. Series of short beeps is low oil. Might be that your float is stuck, or it could be an indication that the vro shaft has stopped turning. Need to have it checked out to be sure.

No, it wasn't a bad spot. Wanted to get out a bit deeper, but wind ans chop was problematic out in deeper foot water, so I fished 8-10 foot water in the creek channel. Caught a good mess. Enough to feed my crew, at least.

How was it going out, havent been over there this year.

Ive used the landing several times. When the lake is high enough, it is my favorite. I went in and out of the landing several times, and only hit the mud once, when I quit paying attention to where I was. Another old guy fishing there had a small mess before I ever even got my boat in the water. He started before the rain.

I used it alot last spring but havent this year.

X2!!!!!! REPLACE the sensor if it's bad. It could also be an obstruction in the water jacket. It will pee regardless of the obstruction, but the engine won't get enough water flow to keep it cool. Pull the thermostat and check it. If uouve ever had a impeller go bad in it, the fins can stop up the water flow to the engine. Just an idea if the oil sensor is good.
