There is no difference. A cock is a mature male chicken, also called a rooster. A cockerel is a immature male chicken.

Well, etymologically, the difference is in the USE of said bird. 'Rooster' is an adult male bird kept for EATING, or one who occupies the roost, as opposed to a bird kept for breeding purposes....
Hence I have a cage of roosters without any hens, that I will slaughter for the table, but I have only one cock with each group of hens. A bird over a year, but still edible is a rooster, a bird over 5 and not headed for the table, but kept for breeding is a cock.

Mother use to buy 500 to a 1,000 day old chicks. At that amount she would get a super low price. You do have some that die off. She would put a sign out at the road and sale off some and almost make her money back. As the chicks got older, the price went up. When the cockerels would get about 9 months old, we had a slaughter day.

Hey Slimey, I looked in my chicken book and the closest purebred I could find to it is the Welsummer. It's also called the "Kellogg's Chicken". I'm looking at the head with the large single comb and the long tail feathers.

ok that chicken in the first picture withe young lady looks nothing like the one that scott posted he is black with a gold neck and the one scott had was red . i had some like that male and female . the female was solid black . i don't remember the bread or name of them , my father knew and as usual i didn't listen or don't remember what he called them . and he has passed so to late to ask him .
