Mississippi river catfish

a couple buddies and I took my boat to the sippi over the weekend. we went down to festus and put in at truman access, which is a back-woods, rough looking place. I didnt like the access because of the characters that were bank fishing there, but no bad stuff happened. i DID like the fact that the current was slower there and there wasn't much barge traffic there. only saw 6-10 barges all weekend. I also like the fact that the channel cats were tearing up the sonney's "Blood" staainkbait! I have no clue how many we caught, but we kept 29 total. and the only reason we kept that many was because they were swallowing the hook. mostly small 1-2lbers but a few 5ish lbers. but fun on light tackle and a great way to kill some time while waiting on that "big bite". we also set a few anchored jugs out just to scout around a little and got a 31lb4oz and a 15lb blue.
the best part was the storm that blew up on saturday night. we knew it was coming, (god bless smart phones) and we were right by the ramp, so we loaded the boat and rode the storm out in the truck. one heck of a light show! I am glad we weren't caught off guard because there were lightning bolts striking everywhere. I love a good thunder storm, as long as I am somewhere safe. :biggrin:biggrin:biggrin

That's going to make for a great fish fry. Sounds like a great day on the water. Did you keep the big jug blues?

I don't normally keep my bigger catfish, I think fish under about 15lbs eat better. however the hook went through the blue's eye, so dinner he is.

Great day on them channels! They're smashing big blues drift fishing in the river down here in the bootheel, if only I could leave the crappie alone!

Nice catch, Its going to be good fish fry for sure. Need to invest in another cooler to hold your fish. i bet those drink cans slid right out your hand with all that catfish slime. .

looking forward to the fish fry, and yes all those cans were a little slick. Lmao! but with 3 guys and all our gear, we needed to consolidate a little. I look at it more like I need a bigger boat! ain't nothin wrong with a little fish slime, I think alcohol neutralizes it anyhow, RIGHT?:puke

I was wondering if your were out there Saturday night fishing. I knew you said you were going but i thought that you would have cancelled knowing the storm was coming through. We got hail at the house, did you get any while sitting in the truck? Congrats on the load of catfish.

nope, no hail. not even too much rain or wind. just a butt load of lightning. and after the storm blew over about 3 sunday morning, we relaunched the boat, and got to watch the distant lightning jumping from cloud to cloud. I love it! the air cooled off and we slept on the boat until dawn, only to wake up to a baitclicker screaming. missed the fish but still a great alarm clock!
one of these days I am gonna give ya a call, maybe once it cools off some. I promise I will!Thumbs Up
