Hummingbird 597ciHd/w Gps -OR- Hummingbird 597ciHD w/GPS and Down imaging? $ difference is about $150. To be used on the bow on the Trolling Motor. Which one do you suggest and or prefer and why. I already purchased the one without the DI but haven't opened it yet and may exchange it for one with DI if you guys think it's worth it. Thanks
I believe it is. I have a Lowrance DSI, and love it. It basically give you everything that the sonar has, but let's you see exactly what structure you are looking at. Cedar Tree, Baboo, Tree Limbs, whatever. Now that they have DSI Technolgy, I wonder why they offer Sonar, except to give you something else. But given the choice of either, or. I would take the DSI.

Some find DI as a replacement for 2d...
Some find DI as a compliment to 2d...
The HB DI units give the abilty to have both in the same unit to view individually or split screen ...

I would add the DI, but if I could only have one of the three,DI, SI, 2D ,in my style of fishing it would be 2D
I have the 597 with down imaging...No way I could go back to regular 2D
Are DI units good in shallow water or do folks get Combo (?) units? Pardon the inexperience.
define shallow,,In the shallower water I fish, 5 to 6 feet, mine (DI) does extremely well, I am very pleased with it,

By shallow, in the drought we're experiencing, I saw 9' at the deepest part of the channel in the river up to inches along the shore.
My naivety on the term Combo. I thought they were ones that had different sonar ability. Down,side, um all the other ones. Lol
I haven't bought any yet. I'm waiting on the iLink Minn Kota troller and will be trying to pick the best, for me, fish finder. I will probably fish the river I live by the majority, the Kankakee. But there are many lakes close by also.

Humminbird DI units have what you would call “combo” sonar in that they have both the DI (Down Imaging) and standard 2D or conventional sonar (see image below of DI unit sonar beams).
Our Si units will have a combination of Si, Di and 2D sonar.
