I have both a HDS 5 and 8. For some reason the GPS accuracy of the 5 is not near as close as the 8. Both of the settings are the same the best I can tell, any Idea what might be casuing this. I really dont want to have to buy a GPS Puck that cost half as much as the finder just to improve the accuracy. Any suggestions?

I not sure. Next time out, turn the satellite view on. Check you EPE distance and GPS fix.
If you have time, turn both units satelite views on and compare the data. Might find something different.
Not to sure about Lowrance but what Ive read if one has the 4000 puck and the other has the 3000 or internal antenna it will be slower and less accurate , i believe
do you have anything in the way of the 5 preventing it from having a clear view of the sky, such as the TM head & shaft, maybe a rod holder & rods, even possibly you depending on the position/direction of the boat if you sit up front. If you can, try to raise the height of the 5 HU itself and see if that imroves anything. I have a HB 788 ci HD mounted on the floor up on the bow, and I get the donut at times, but have read where the "donut issue" has been resolved. I've thought/gonna figure out a way to raise the 788 up some off the floor and see if that improves my donut issue. They can be tempermental as all get out I know.
Can you tell us how you experience the different accuracy? Is it coming back to a spot, or staying on a spot?
are you talking about a circle that comes up on your navigation screen?? The donut/circle I get is only when the boat stops moving and the gps can no longer get a heading so it goes to the donut ,basically showing no movement by the boat/gps. But you may also.be talking about something else.??Quote:

Turn your unit on in the driveway, and I'd bet you see your position changing as you sit stationary. There's just to many variables to put you dead on. Take the built in error, then compound that with approaching the waypoint from a different direction, plus the delay of the brushpile showing up on the sonar, and finally the location of the GPS antenna in relation to the transducer. I've found my accuracy getting back to a waypoint improves considerably if I track back in the same direction I marked the W/P originally. Approaching at 90 degrees usually has me missing the brushpile unless it's a huge one.
Have you tried talking to Lowrance about the issue. It seems to me 20-30 ft is far from acceptable when comes to accuracy.
