Made a trip to Bass Pro and picked up some Road Runners to supplement my meager Beetle Spin assortment..........then it was off to Northwest River. Managed to pick up a few crappie, a striped bass, and a few Large Mouth Bass. Everything caught on a white 1/16 ounce RR! Tried a few other colors, but that was what worked on this trip. Was thinking of trying one of the Suffolk lakes this wekend. I've never fished any of them. Do you have any recommenations? Thought about putting in by Northwest River Park as it's close to the house, and perhaps easier to find some structure to fish. Have a kayak but no depth finder to help in my search.

I gotta agree with Jet4. I think Western Branch would be your best bet right now.
Thanks guys! I just went to the VDGIF web site to get some information and it says a Norfolk boat permit is required. Do you know if that includes kayaks? Trying to find that information on the web site and no luck yet.

Belay my last! I found the info on the City of Norfolks site..............didn't realize they owned the lakes in Suffolk! $40 seems a little stiff for a permit. I'll take a drive out and look around. Thanks again for the tips!
A daily permit is $5.00 and when you reach age 62 the yearly permit is $10.00
Thanks Bill. Got a few more years to go before I hit 62, but after looking at the list of lakes covered by the permit, I think I'll sign up for the year. Going to hit NW River early and will head out to Oceans East to get the permit.
If you fish jigs pearl is a good color for Western Branch as well as pink/pearl. Most of the 47 I caught there on July 4 were 13' deep and of those 47, 37 were caught in the afternoon.

When you say Pearl.....I assume you are talking about the tails? I stopped by Wally World and alll I saw were "kits." Is there a "standard" brand that most folks prefer? My last trip to Bass Pro was a real eye opener when I looked at all of the plastic that was available. And I thought trout flies were over the top! The other day I was using a 2" white grub tail and white curly tail as well as some green/black. THe white worked the best by far. I also tried a couple of different jig head colors but wasn't able to tell if they made a difference.
Welcome aboard, HJ! Monks Crappie is a great place to get jigs: Bobby Garland Baby Shads in various colors, and Kalin's 2" twist-tail grubs have great action. I learned about that place here, not too long ago!

Thanks for all the tips and links folks............I appreciate the help! Just what I need, more tackle shops to visit!
Spent yesterday morning on Northwest River. Got to the water around 5:00 AM and found myself in the middle of a bass fishing tournament. By the time I paddled to the areas where I had my previous success's, the spots were taken. Not wanting to be a pot licker, I paddled on down and worked the banks throwing Road Runners and Beetle spins. Didn't have much luck and kept getting hung up, depth was only a couple of feet. Switched to a Bitsy Minnow, and it was Katy bar the door! I had great luck with the brim and smaller bass, but could not get a crappie to the kayak. I lost more fish than I could count, but the lure was working so well I kept throwing it. The lure was brand new, and the hooks seemed sharp, so I'm not sure what was happening. Perhaps I was trying to bring them in too quick? I ended up fishing by a duck blind and during a retreive, I stopped to swat a mosquito. When I restarted my retreive, I found I was hung up, which surprised me because I thought it was a floating lure. I only have 4 pound test on my reel, so I started paddling over to the blind. All of a suddend my lure started moving and my rod bent over double. When I got the fish to the boat, I was shocked to see how big this bass was. Never figured such a little lure would catch such a big fish. Tried to lip him and as I'm pulling him out of the water, it shook and back in it went. Still hooked up, so I reel him back and now I see both hooks are in his mouth. After a few attemts to get my fingers on him again, I tried to grab him with a plastic fish grip. True the the fisherman's code, the line broke and I watch my bitsy minnow swim off with this incredible fish. Sorry, no pictures to post and I'd hate to guess at how big it was.........but I'd almost swear there were hull numbers painted on it's side :Doh:. Man, what a day.............no dinner though. In any event, I can't wait to get out there again. I wil pick up some different types of plastic to try so thaks again for the tips!
