hold up a peace sign with your 2 fingers and finish jig that away works great
PM me your email address and I will email you a video.
Like Donald said, forget the tool, and just use your hands:

This is one of the better ones using te Materelli whip finisher, but you should also learn to do it by hand.

I love my whip finisher but sometimes you simply can't get it to work right at all. Practice with it and watch a couple videos to really get the hang of it.
I found it was easier to just use my fingers as well.
Never had a need for one, myself. Been using my fingers for 50 years now and never had a tie come loose.
Try doing a whip finish by hand on a size 20 fly!!!!!!! Way easier with the whip finisher!!!! Both have a place in your tying. The Thompson style whip finisher can be a real PITA till you learn to use it though!!!!!LOL
Need to learn to use your fingers...it will go faster wants you get the hang of it...have two sizes of whip tools...the larger gaped one works better for me but the smaller gap one comes in handy on smaller flies...
I can finish by hand, but prefer to use a rotary finisher. Makes it much easier to lay the thread exactly where you want it.
Just finished my first two jigs with a Matarelli whip finish tool and am whipped(need to practice). am waiting on an order of chenile from Barlows and am again interested in tying a jig that will catch a fish. Will post a pic of finished product later.--shu
Sure is nice to have all the good info on tying--thanks guys.
Little late to the thread....I just started tying and started with a Thompson-style, VERY hard! Got a Matarelli-style as many suggested and watched a couple youtube videos and was way easier. Don't think I'll be able to finish by hand though, my long girlie nails might get in the way! Gonna try though!
I don't like hand finish for me mostly because my hands have too much rough skin and the thread gets caught on them. Anyway I am so much faster with the whip finish tool and it makes a better finish than hands. Hands will work as well as far as holding, but I don't think it's any faster once you really get use to it. I keep mine really close to where I tie on my vise and it's so easy to pick up because I stick the end of it in a hole I drilled in the wood at my tying space.
